  1. I know your problem and it's not the one you think it is. So for the record, Caterham road CSR 15 inch wheels: - Fronts 7x15 marked ET13 but are machined to ET40 if you listen to Caterham or ET38 if you measure mine. - Rears are 9x15 and are marked ET30 or ET8 (just to keep you on your toes) but if you measure then you get ET30! CSR race wheels - will also fit a road CSR after rear brake modifications like mine: - Fronts 7.5x13 ET34 - Rears 9.5x13 ET34 or if you have the race suspension set up with different rear uprights then you can run the race 15 inch wheel package - Front 7x15 ET40 - Rear 9x15 ET27 If I go to the Caterham parts website I find your wheel with an ET13 offset. https://caterhamparts.co.uk/lightweight-15-orcus/5257-6-5x15-orcus-wheel-anthracite.html So far so good. However, in around 2013 or maybe it was 2014, Caterham changed the upright to a AP one. So the wheels after that date changed offset to accommodate. So your wheel would not be centered under the wing which is exactly what you have. What people did was change wing stays. I am not an expert on Caterham wing stays but I have heard people talk about there are 6 or 7 different versions available. How you know which one is beyond me. Your friendly Caterham dealer needs to chime in on this one. So this is one option. Being cheap, my first suggestion would be to see if you can heat and rebend the wingstay to accommodate? A second suggestion would be to unbond the wing and move it along the stay asymmetrically and rebond - that wont work well for you since your car does not follow the normal silastic bonding method but instead has screws to hold the wings on. You could still do this and rebond but you would have to accept some holes on the carbon. Tape the holes with black tape then apply the silastic.
  2. I would hope Wirewheel know about the posting - they are the ones selling the car! I am sure it handled as nicely as expected. I would expect these are later replacements and not the originals. Shocks for our cars need re-valving to be calibrated for the lighter weight. The springs may have been saloon car spec too instead of a correctly calculated weighting. You cannot just buy suspension stuff off the shelf - it all needs some level of customization to work right on a seven to. Well said. I can pick faults in every brand of sevens' suspension. As Panamericano notes, every creator is proud of their creation and so not inclined to want to hear about perceived flaws by others. Even the Caterham CSR, which is probably the most advanced design or recent years and was tuned by Multimatic, got it wrong (too soft in rear end/roll center too high thanks to use of 1990 VW Passat uprights). Further, a lot of suspension design issues come back to compromises from packaging everything within a small sized chassis. There is not an unlimited budget either. I suspect the Rotus rear end was likely re-designed for some specific reasons at the time (probably cost) but may never be known. Graham - is the Dan you refer to, the same one referred to by another poster in that Bringatrailer thread? He is mentioned as being hired to build Rotus cars.
  3. Welcome aboard James! Hope you can now see the links I shared with you earlier! :seeya: Cheers Mike
  4. I don't know if people here are following along to this auction of a Rotus here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1994-rotus-7/ However, some fascinating posts have emerged from the gentleman with forum ID "redcloud1728" on the back history to Rotus, their emergence and chassis design. If you are interested in Rotus cars then it is worth read of the full thread and all the comments.
  5. And here was me thinking he just yodeled over the car one Sunday morning after a big night of moonshine? :jester: Should have guessed by the lack of chunks...
  6. John - What type of hp range are you expecting out of your 2.4L build?

  8. Yes Bob you are right. I observed that. Bringatrailer has its own microclimate for selling sevens. If you had a Caterham crossflow classic style of car then your best market is BAT as it adds at least $5k to the final price realized (before listing fee). Not sure about the other brands or more recent Caterhams - data is so patchy for any statistical interpretation.

  10. I am waiting for that "dum-dum" to arrive on this thread... :jester:
  11. All very good points raised. This is why I love the larger displacement Duratec engines. They have lovely fat torque curves which gives shift point flexibility no matter what the need.
  12. Quite a few of the my male colleagues and team have said that very thing this week as they contemplated completing a home haircut. I think you came out of this better than they did. :jester:
  13. Original Cosworth literature says 8800rpm for Tom's engine. It has the special billet crank. Mine did not have the special crank so limited to 7800rpm No real need to go that high though, the peak torque/power curves mean it makes sense to change well before that. Edited for correction - its actually 8900rpm for Tom's engine. I reconfirmed my memory this morning
  14. Lotus 7 S4 https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-lotus-super-seven/ If you go back a few pages to post #2392 (or close), S2Europa notes this exact car was sold on Ebay not that long ago for $15K. Dealer then turned around and was seeking close to $30k in the ad found for the weekly sales post. Let's see what the Bringatrailer auction brings.
  15. You may not find it as as pronounced as me going from 15 inch wheels to 13 inch wheels but.... The 13 inch wheels are lighter. The reduction in unsprung weight allows the car to handle better and on my cars seems to improve the acceleration slightly. I find the ride is better with a thicker sidewall/higher profile. The breakaway predictability at limit is improved/less sudden. I slightly improved gearing points The downside, is that the rubber selection in 13 inch wheel sizes is somewhat limited although probably about the same or better that you experience with 14 inch wheels. No impact on speedo unless the rolling diameter changes. For my example, my CSR came on 15 inch wheels and (I think...its before my morning coffee) a 45 tire profile. There are web calculators that allow you to calculate the tire diameter with wheel and rubber. Knowing that then you line up your proposed 13 inch wheel and tire combo and measure the tire diameter. Ideally they will match. However, in the real world, they will not. My fronts were a 1% smaller diameter but no impact on speedo. My rears were about 0.6% smaller. Given the Caterham speedometer is one of the most inaccurate known to the motoring world and consistently reads higher than GPS with an error rate of 3 to 8% depending on speed (thanks to the Hall effect sensor), my shift just made that slightly worse but by only 6/10ths of a mile over 100 miles. I felt that was an acceptable error rate especially as I improved the gearing points when on track. You can buy the kit to fix the speedo but it depends on if the error rate really warrants it. However, in your case, you are on 14 inch wheels. The change will not be as profound. If you are not going to track the car then I would question the need for it as you may not notice the difference on the road so much. One possible reason for you to evaluate 13 inch wheels is the range of tire options you have available to you in the 14 inch size. If the choices are not good then shifting to 13 inch does get you into a small range of very good tire options that suit the Caterham well.

  18. As I heard it, the tooling from the South African operations was being moved to CO. In the interim there were enough parts, chassis and other components in stock to manage through that move process until they get back to making things. Calling Tbox56 to the forum to comment on this
