  1. In the latest instalment of doing UK/European track days in a Caterham, this time we are at Anglesey, Wales. It is way oop northern end of Wales – a 5+ hour drive from Heathrow airport. You can get closer by flying from the USA into Manchester but I have had enough of third world airports this year. Ideally you would double head this event with an Oulton Park Day – about 2 hours away. Anglesey is only 70 something miles from Ireland across the Irish Sea. This location on the Irish Sea presents problems and opportunities. Opportunities, as this is one of the most scenic circuits on earth perched on top of the cliffs above the crashing ocean. Problems, because of that ocean, winds can be sweeping across the track at gale force and it is highly likely it will rain while you are there. Naturally, I was rolling eyes the day before my event when I discovered it was perfect sun, no wind as I knew then that I was going to have a crap weather day the following day…guaranteed. Anyway, I was last at this circuit in 2014 running a rental R300 race car at here http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?9660-On-Track-with-Croc and here http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?9675-Caterham-R300-at-Donington-and-Anglesey-Circuits&highlight=anglesey This time would be with more hp with a 420R under my seat. For an overview of the circuit we have the map: There are two basic circuit configurations – International GP with the second long hairpin and Coastal which cuts that phallic portion of the circuit out and introduces the corkscrew to connect the hill to pit straight. In case you wonder why I come this far for a circuit? Its exciting. No other circuit puts as much G forces on my body. By the end of the day my neck hurt, I had bruising from the side bolters of the seat, my fingers hurt from throwing the car into corners. And for all that it is not a very fast track in average speed. Its also very pretty around the Anglesey peninsula. We ran International in the morning and then Coastal in the afternoon to give some variety. The day before my event there was a Plop Race going on. This name, more commonly associated with the short sharp sound of a fresh log playfully slapping at water in a toilet bowl, was actually referring to a completely different kind of shit in that it was scooter endurance racing. Yes! Who knew that 8 hours of 50cc racing could be so exciting. I pissed myself laughing at the crashes, the collisions and the “I am unable to avoid the tire wall” moments on the circuit with the most run off of any circuit out there. The rules are simple – you must use the correct engine with its limited displacement. No mods of brakes or chassis allowed. Fairing/bodywork is free to modify in that you can remove it or run it. Streamlining is not allowed. Engine is free to modify but folks, keep in mind that if you give a 50cc engine a compression of 7 then it will not last one lap of the circuit let alone 8 hours. There is no point being the fastest on the warm-up laps. One team in the pits I chatted with had burned through 5 engines by 3pm. He hoped they would finish as he had no more engines…oops! So with that in mind, my track overview photos will include many examples of “plops” on the track. Turn 1 after the start line is a fast left hander. Tight entry but opens up nicely on exit with a good run possible into turn 2 – just watch the cars exiting the pits here. First photo is of the “The Banking” i.e. a banked turn 2. Background is the Irish Sea and the mountains of Snowdonia (BTW very good twisty roads in there on your way to and from Anglesey).

  4. For the record, I am referring to the Hertz Prestige collection that you can rent by the hour.
  5. Oh dear...I personally know how expensive this story goes... Does it involve: - something red? - makes brrrm brrrrm noises? - Daisy Dukes? - Blonde hair? - copious amounts of lubricant and gasoline? - A fair amount of burning rubber smell? You do know a midlife crisis is cheaper when you just pay by the hour?

  11. Must be in the line with all the MILFs at the coffee shop getting a fancy skinny latte made on organic soy. Did you see anyone mooching around fully color coordinated in red?
  12. Mike - It is only a 1.4L Rover engine. Vmax looks about right.
  13. Mr Fluffy Tail drives pretty well
  14. Perfect for that hairdresser with multiple hair dryers.. :leaving:
  15. You are likely right. I was thinking it looked like the 1.8L Duratec L series that was used in the Mazda equivalent of the Ford Ranger plus Mazda saloons in the Japanese home market and in Europe in the Mazda 6 plus Ford Mondeo. However, in hindsight these only introduced in 2001. So a Miata engine donor would make far more sense as you suggest. Borrowing the Miata rear IRS would be a smart idea too. The boot is particularly small which would infer a bulkier IRS set up.
  16. No more updates, just planting ideas... Starting from next year, those in the USA can import the Mitusoka Type Zero. Those in Canada already can. No its not a WW2 fighter plane - its a seven It has a 1.8L Mazda version of the Duratec. So respectable power through a Mazda Miata 5 speed box. I particularly like the sign for numpties on the manifold saying "hot" duh! It has a nicely finished off and equipped boot area. I do like how they tire shined the tread of the spare wheel... And the interior is particularly well finished off. Driver and passenger side airbags is a novel touch in a car where there is no impact protection for the fleshy stuff above the waist. Price is about where decent similar era Caterhams are going for these days, albeit LHD rather than RHD. The quality of its presentation is similar to the Superformance S1 which were well finished off. And its for sale now if you need immediate gratification. Ad is here if you wish to know more about this seven replica not traditionally this side of the Pacific ocean (or Atlantic if you go the wrong way around) https://www.tradecarview.com/used_car/mitsuoka/zero+1/24900834/?isNew=1
  17. 18. Anglesey is iconic for the location and scenery Weather can be fickle though.
  19. You post at 5pm Eastern and you only just woke up? Hello? Good morning? What did you do last night?
  20. Dear Bawwwwwb - Numpty recommends alcohol. Even I look attractive after many drinks and a Ford 150 could look like a se7en given time, space, bourbon, daydreaming blondes and some guacamole dip to munch on. :cooldude: Sadly, I needed to change my sturdy 15 inch macbook to a new laptop given I was refused for air travel last week given the recall, not that mine was subject to the recall, but that many airlines are just blanket banning 15 inch macbooks from any travel now - both in cabin and checked luggage. Fedexing a laptop to home from Norway before being able to fly was a right pain in the posterior. :banghead: I will update on Saturday in Anglesey as I am there on track next weekend. Then the following weekend is Marrakech. Then the weekend after that is Geneva.... :seeya:
  21. The searches did not run properly last night...probably because I switched to 2 new computers - one mac and one microsoft - this last week. Call it user error by numpty!
  22. You forget we all have airbags behind the wheel... I love that type of car and driving it hard. Makes you drive appropriately so that you do not run out of talent and kiss a tree, cliff, rock, SUV, etc.
  23. Really Daniel? Its never worried me. Works just fine in LSD mode. You can get modest incremental replacements out of the UK by transmission specialists. They are good up to around 350hp in a competition environment. For us we would not stress it out that much. The real issue with that diff was the original chassis only had 2 fixing points. Then the extra boot braces came in around 2010 for 4 point mounting but even then I have always been concerned for torque effect ripping the mounts off. I think the article is wrong. Arch is only making 1 chassis - the S5 CSR which is CSR sized.
