Tell me about it - there is nothing like being pulling hard at 7000rpm in 4th gear on the straight in my Mustang - it just purrs! What a wonderful engine. The engine builder told me its good for 9000rpm. :ack: Not that I will ever go that high. I chicken out at 7000. :blush:

I recognize the Opel Omega. Differs from its Vauxhall Carlton cousin by the LHD. Absolutely bat-crazy transformation by Lotus. I drove Vauxhall one in the UK in 1995 and it it was astoundingly quick in the straight line - just breathtaking. I would love to own one again but I have enough cars. And anyway, I am currently recommissioning the earlier mid-80s Holden version of the Opel/Vauxhall (with Lotus input) - so it would be redundant. I remember the Lotus bicycle, the Lotus 6 but what is special about the S4? Something looks different?

I agree with Dave. I have both a Caterham with IRS and a Caterham with de dion. On track where it is smooth there is negligible difference between the two. In the NJMP Lightning corner with 15 degree banking the CSR just squats and puts the power down beautifully whereas the de dion struggles but thats the only corner where I could pick a difference. On the road, the IRS makes the Caterham feel like a big car and it is the fastest point to point back road car I have ever driven. Bumps do not throw it offline or tire out the driver. All sevens usually require fettling to sort them out. All of mine have. You dont always need a Caterham with IRS - the CSR is now silly money. A Birkin with IRS with a hi performance 2.3L Duratec, a Sadev box and 13 inch wheels with 8 inch rubber, would be fantastic on track. If it is more a road car then the Caterham 6 speed box would be my choice instead of a Sadev. But you dont really say what your anticipated use of a seven would be? Exclusively road with an odd track day? A total track toy? That will dictate your spec choice in the end.

Thats worth a bit of grip over some sport street tires. Fast in and slow out? Or just a coast into turn 2? - There are a few other corners where the Caterham was braking earlier than the other cars (e.g. turn 5 and turn 7)? Bit strange...maybe it is the rhythm of the track? Edited to add - its relative track position not braking point. So top speed differential has an effect before the Caterham claws back the amount it is behind.

Interesting. I too felt the wheel/tire combo on the CSR was holding it back so put myself through the pain of converting the brakes/hubs to take a 13 inch wheel. It fixed the problem beautifully and as a bonus tweaked the final drive gearing just enough to make it perfect for NJMP. I still think it is too softly sprung with too much travel in the rear but I live with that. A garage? Nope, not commenting....not at all! :rofl: Yes I think I know what you mean. The CSR IRS is relatively softly sprung and longish travel so loading up in a sweeper and putting the power down it would work well but it is then compromised in the tight esses. I think that is a very good idea!

A wonderful write up on Barber. While I have been to the collection and wandered around the track fringes, I have not driven there. One day...when I can get enough free vacation time. To help visualize it from a driver's point of view I borrowed a video of our old track buddy MikeG from this forum who has been there. It really does wind around with no long straights which would allow a small light car to make a bigly mess of larger heavier cars. I never really appreciated that until now. This was a great read with my morning cup! Two questions: 1) Which operator was running the track day? 2) Putting aside the obvious gearbox differences how does the handling compare between 620R and CSR? (not that I am planning to upgrade!)

He was closer to 6'8" We did put Karl in my old yellow SV (now with JLumba) before he ordered his own Caterham to work out how badly he popped over the top of the regular Caterham roll bar. He fit just fine with the seat all the way back - no pedal box issues. I have photos somewhere of that day. That allowed him to confirm he would fit an SV with the S-type leather seats, a tall Caterham roll bar and lowered floors for road driving. But then he later went for a taller custom scaffolding so he could go on track... and the madness set in...

Ok - now I understand. I avoided the sausage filter cutout with a small snorkel carbon ram cold air intake. Hi Seb I was told these airboxes were restrictive on power. I tried to spec my CSR with one and the Caterham UK factory guys talked me out of it as a power downgrade. Are you trying to get around sound limits at Lime Rock? cheers mike
