Nice driving Mike. Although it still pays not to be behind you on turns 3-4 as you are still kicking up all those little rocks. :smash:

 

You can probably go a little wider too in the 2-3 section so as to get a better angle on 4.

 

Interesting to watch TBox 56 go wide for some reason out of the bowl and that caused him to miss the apex and swing wide and put the two wheels off on the left. He hit that hole hard sort of like Shane did on his crash video. Tom cracked his headlight with that jolt. And he almost lost it there with that move to bring it on track.

 

You did get a point by by Steve going into turn 5 but they black flagged you as that's just a bad place to pass as one of you is going to be forced off line and that is a tough turn if you aren't placed correctly.

Tom, one of my "speed secrets:)" is to go shallow into turn 3, rather than use the classic line. Even tho it looks bad. What little I lose in 3, I gain back, and more in 4, because I am then pointed much straighter into turn 4 and can blast through it at a higher speed, climbing the curbs as much as possible on both 3 and 4, again to make them as straight as possible. I seem to catch everyone there, even thee guys who are faster everywhere else.

To respond to your observations on lines, I would say it is a question of sacrifice. No, not virgins, turns! Is it better to sacrifice turn 2/3 for turn 4 or vice versa? Your assessment is that compromising the exit of turn 2 and entry of turn 3 is better than

(a) the lightweight line, being turn 2/3 into a single arc double apex with a right hand exit to allow an uncompromised turn 4 with higher average speed maintained going onto turn 5, or

(b) the Porker/Corvette line, being turn 2/3 into a single arc double apex with a left hand exit to allow an compromised turn 4 with slower exit (but then these cars have more power to rocket out on exit.

 

 

In fairness I don't know the answer as I have not got enough track logging data of your line to test the theory that your approach maintains a higher average speed through the 2/3/4 complex. But I accept you may be right because if nothing else it is a line that you feel most confident using to get your fastest lap times plus you are travelling less distance by constraining the 2/3 steering arc (albeit with less speed).

 

I know I prefer a hybrid of (a) and your method where I like the single arc curve through 2/3 as the car is nicely settled with no steering input changes (higher speed this way but further in-corner distance), then (similar to you) straight shoot from exit of 3 to somewhat early apex 4 as there is more room on the turn 4 exit than most people think plus I can put power down early to best grab speed over to turn 5.

 

I suspect at the end of the day it is 6 of one and half dozen of the other!

Dan - I need to send you the email I sent Dave with the products and links to what I use. I would not bother changing cameras, just change the mount - I suspect that will solve the issue. The Braun sixzero is pretty old by current standards - a gopro black will kill it for quality and it probably matches a go pro silver.

My sound was via a $23.-00 external for my GoPro2. I got it from Amazon (where else?). I wrapped it in a sock and duct taped the whole thing under the dash. It is described as a Cowboy Studio, model# BY-LM20, on my Amazon receipt.

Dan: I have now uploaded a video from Day 2. Again, it is totally unedited so the action doesn't sart til 5-10' in. I chased you a bit at about the 13' point. I haven't watched the whole thing, so I am not sure if you appear elsewhere. Until someone embeds it, you will have to google "978Kitcat" to find it on YouTube. It is described there as NJMP-pt 2 008. Initially, Google will just give you the stuff you ave already seen so you have to click on "repeat the search with the omitted results included"-at the very bottom of the Google search pop up.

Sorry I missed this event again. Unfortunately, the timing seems to generally conflict with the fencing summer nationals that I attend annually with my daughter. Happy to see that it's grown and thriving. Nice to see many of my favorite people in the hobby (and Mike and Tom ;-P) in the photos.

I've just PM'd fmorser regarding his photos in this thread that show storm clouds o'er the karting track. I've submitted an article to Low Flying and the editor has asked whether hi-res images of this scene can be provided.

 

I have no idea how frequent a visitor fmorser is to this site, so I'll wait a little while to see if he gets back to me. If anyone has another line of communication through to him I'd appreciate if you could let him know about my PM.

so what's the likelihood of the other track for next year????? I'm thinking about ring and pinion ratios so I'm not at red line in top gear so much of the time.........just red line in a couple of other gears.

Hi Fred, It will be a while before they set next year's Member days schedule so we won't know until that happens. Unfortunately there is another group that rents the track out on that same weekend that we have been choosing and they have preference as the track usually sells the available dates and works our member days around them.

 

Mike and I would love to have a day or Two on Thunderbolt as it's really a nice twisty track for our se7ens. But we will have to wait awhile before we know.

 

So get to work synchronizing your cardinal grammeters. :rofl: Tom

I have already set up my jigs for the prefabulated amulite baseplate and the panandermic semi-boliod stator slots.........

 

the semi-boliod requirement was the real kicker ...........may have to bust out the big grinder for that

I can definitely say that a July 4 long weekend on the Thunderbolt track will not happen. The bike group have a lock on that track that weekend since the track opened and they are locked in permanently - sadly for us.

 

Tom and I will have the debate over alternative weekend dates and track options when the schedule gets published in January 2017 (or if we re lucky maybe December 2016).
