I noticed that it has a "rebuilt Georgia title". Has anyone had experience registering a car with that kind of title in another state, in my case Tennessee?

George

Here are the pages from Tennessee DMV website

Getting a title

https://www.tn.gov/revenue/title-and-registration/vehicle-titling---registration/vehicle-titling/titling-a-vehicle--current-residents-.html

Seems fairly simple - nothing there that would present a challenge.

However, if you read the section on rebuilt titles, it only talks about in state conversions of salvage to rebuilt title after you have performed work to rebuild it. So it asks for parts receipts which is not relevant for you.

https://www.tn.gov/revenue/title-and-registration/additional-information/salvage--non-repairable-and-rebuilt-vehicles.html

and here

https://www.tn.gov/revenue/tax-fraud/salvage-certificates-and-rebuilt-vehicles.html

A little more reading reveals that assembled or specially constructed vehicles (aka kit cars) are handled at a county level

https://tnclerks.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000359483-Rebuilt-Vehicle

Only salvage to rebuilt title conversions are handled at a state level. The county instructions are pretty clear in the above link. Your position to assert on titling is that the Caterham is a 1973 Lotus Seven Series 3 Replica , so it fits the custom/specially constructed car (i.e. it came from a kit). You will likely have to go through an inspection but thats normal for these cars in most states. Emissions testing requirements will be county based.

I would go to the effort of contacting Caterham UK to get an replacement MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) as proof of kit car/replica origins. Explain that your State needs it to register the Caterham. You will have to provide VIN/car details. It may be with the car's documentation but its usually surrendered on original title application. I think it will be very helpful to improve the car's current title position as you transfer into TN. Your goal should be to walk out with a TN title of a "1973 Lotus 7 Series 3 Replica" which is how the SEMA process should work in TN.

SEMA has a wealth of information on titling custom/replica/hot rod vehicles by state. Here is TN

https://www.semasan.com/semaga/TagTitleToolbox_TN.pdf

While I have not ever had to do this in person as I have never lived in TN, the process looks fairly manageable and straightforward since TN follows the SEMA model. Actually, on paper, TN looks quite a friendly state to work with on sevens. It could be so much worse.

A Stalker XL weighs 2000 pounds???

Nah. More like about 1860 pounds. At least, that is what my XL weighed with 1/2 fuel and the slightly less powerful LS3/480. I suspect that the LS3/525 does not weigh anymore than my former engine. He does have the wings and attachment hardware for them that might add 140 pounds so I would guess that the number may be pretty accurate. He likely had to take it to a weigh station prior to getting it licensed here in Florida. I remember having to take a Classic Stalker to a scrap yard, hop out of the car and get a weight ticket so that I could change the registration from Texas to Florida. The Classic Stalker only weighed about 1400 pounds IIRC with a 3.8L n/a engine.

After reading that ad, I think he has not much chance of selling that car at the price he wants. I get he is thoroughly pissed off at Stalker for some issues but you don't throw a manufacturer under a bus and not expect that action to rub off on the car you have for sale. Secondly he misses the point with our cars - they are more highly strung and require a level of owner involvement in fettling to get them exactly right. They are not turn key Toyotas by nature. Thats why the driving experience is so special.

So with full fuel load and the wing attachments you are essentially at 2000 pounds for a Stalker XL?

wow!

A Caterham SV with full tanks is 1350 pounds - 650 pounds lighter.

Whose been hitting those donuts eh?

Where is the extra weight coming from if the Stalker with 3.8SC is at 1400 pounds? Engine is how much more? Frame? Larger fuel tank?

IIRC, the tubing that Dennis and Scott used on the Classic Stalkers was 1.25" OD vs 1.0" on the Caterhams. Those old GM 3.8 liter iron engines with aluminum heads (?) actually weigh more than a modern LS GM engine. Finally, it is likely that the C10 axles add significant weight.

After reading the ad, I have to think that somebody is not a car guy.

That's my ad. I am a car guy, but I bought a turnkey car but I received a car that has to be stripped down and have a cage rebuilt (among other issues). I'm more than capable of "fettling" and fixing everything but that's not what was paid for. I don't want to keep the car after everything that has happened, there's more to it than just the defects. I want no association with stalker.

As for the price and such, I know it's high and the defects bring it down. I'm required by law to disclose those defects, and I have to sell in good faith (try to get best price possible) in order to recover the remaining damages.

Through the years, I've certainly had my issues with the Mineharts, but I’ve always worked it out without tossing father and son under the bus. But then again, I’m pretty handy with a wrench.:jester:

Apex, don't take it personally. Our Croc has ruffled feathers before, and will again. But, that's why crocs are so cute. Occasionally a bit snarlly, but they make great boots.
