This is a 1996 open wheel, open cockpit street legal Indy style car. Small block Chevy V-8 motor. Corvair trans-axle for the transmission. Aluminum Corvette rims with the aluminum spacers and like new tires. The car weighs 2,000 lbs. removable momo steering wheel. The brakes can be adjusted for front and rear bias. The body of the car is sheet metal with Zeus fasteners on the service panels. The whole front assembly is easily removed for servicing. The engine bay cover is also removable for servicing of the engine along with a couple more service panels.

 

Oh geez - and here I am worried about driving a Caterham on the road. With this bad boy you could take out an SUV sump with your head and be a speed bump to mommy on a grocery run. Perfect for all occasions. But why is it 2000 pounds? Was it made out of heavy gauge sheet steel?

Considering 4 spoke Revolutions were available in '67 and minilites in '64, I'd still consider them a period correct choice for this car. The wider rear wings look like they are needed to accommodate the width/backspace revolutions though. This car was on ebay previously (and did not meet reserve). I think it had many of these same parts, so it seems the new other just had Tony Ingram complete the project and is flipping it. I generally prefer the slimmer S2 fenders, but otherwise I remember the car looking pretty nice in the ebay ad. There's no doubt Tony finished it to a high standard. I do think the price is a bit optimistic..especially as I think it is fitted with a crossflow instead of a pre-crossflow.

The twin cam itself is worth quite a bit more than a crossflow, So I think this one is actually not too far off (maybe a couple grand too high). It should be pretty comparable to an early caterham and it's got some nice details like the wingard 1055 lights (Though I can't figure out why they're mounted sideways?) I suppose it depends on how much work it is to bring it to driving standards after sitting for so many years.

Your comments on the Oregon Arch chassis clone are spot on. Sadly it needs work based on another forum member's message. From that I concluded it needs to come down in price to allow for the extra. Otherwise its sort of just like a Caterham without the price premium of a true S3 Lotus 7.

I have a home built aluminum framed mid-engine car for sale. This is similar to the "Locost" Lotus 7 replicas.

 

It is powered by a 2009 Honda CBR1000rr 1 liter 4 cylinder motor (4400 miles on it). This motor makes somewhere around 180hp, and the car weighs less than 1200lbs. Imagine cutting the weight of a miata in half, and adding 50hp.

 

Speaking of Miatas, this car uses miata subframes, suspension, steering, brakes, axles, uprights, and the differential. So it handles like a miata that went on a 1000+lb diet. Also, maintenance parts are cheap and plentiful, as are upgrades.

 

The shocks and springs come from (4) 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles. They are high quality adjustable gas shocks and are also really cheap to replace.

 

Seats are Kirkey intermediate road racing aluminum seats, and the fuel cell is a 12 gallon RCI aluminum tank.

 

The roll bar is made from 1.75" DOM steel tubing and adds not only safety but stiffness to this ride.

 

Power goes through a combination reverse/overdrive box into the miata rear differential, so no chain maintenance on this bike engine car.

 

So basically with this car you're getting everything you'd ever want in a miata, plus a 13,000rpm screaming banshee of a power plant with a 6 speed sequential gearbox.

 

Now for the downsides:

 

It's not exactly "finished". Though it will be sold as a running, driving car, I have not yet installed the headlights, tail lights, blinkers, and mirrors to make it street legal.

 

These cars are street legal in NC, without a windshield, etc., but you still need to pass the basic safety inspection for good tires and working head/tail/brake/reverse lights.

 

The upsides:

 

I have all the lights and stuff the car needs, along with a bunch of other stuff (like a racing fire suppression system) available with the car.

 

The bottom line:

 

My wife and I are going to spend the next unknown number of years doing missions work in Guatemala. If you think this is your kind of project, make me an offer and let me know how "done" it needs to be for you to want it.

A question for the USA7s members. Another forum member has raised concerns in a polite PM to me that my conjecturing based on the advertisement and other personal impressions is unhelpful to the seller and misleading to other forum members who may be buyers. I will note that the ad in question was not a for sale ad on USA7s but one of my links to his Ebay/Craigslist ad off forum. I can sort of see his point of view as a seller. My view is the advertisement was inadequate inviting conjecture from forum members as we all tried to assess what was up for sale and the value being sought. The forum member is not a paid up club member so could not advertise directly on USA7s.

 

I am aware of the USA7s forum protocol on not criticizing other forum member's own for sale ads when listed on this site but this would not apply when it is a re-link from Ebay or Craigslist and the seller is not bothering with the forum.

 

For what it is worth, I believe that an advertisement should stand on its own with good description and photos if you expect someone to buy it on the internet through a site like Ebay. Unfortunately, most ads do not meet that standard. However, I think the Bringatrailer model works well in that situation as you get a variety of intelligent input that can make up for the advertisment inadequacies. Its why I respect other USA7s members chiming in here with their views. But am I wrong as it was pointed out to me?

When originally looking for a seven, pointers, tips, and off hand comments in the forum were invaluable. Here too subtle observations: "the left hand widget was not made until '85 for a car advertised as oem '64..." can help others make informed decisions.
