So here is an interesting question: I've been told the colored dot that is painted on new tires should align with the valve stem. Supposedly this will reduce the total weight you need to balance the assembly. I've also read that the paint is for match mounting. As I have 4 new rims and tires, I'd like to do it right the first time. Any help or insight is appreciated.

That's true for Yokohama (red dots) and other brands. Some have yellow and red dots. Verify meaning with the manufacturer. (Tirerack may have answers.)

The next step is to supervise the tire mounter to ensure compliance. Don't assume they know this practice.

That used to be true, but not anymore. Sometimes that dot indicates a storage date. Stop by my shop and I'll put them on my Hunter GSP 9700.

Hey Bob--I'll be by in the morning to pick up the light bulbs--I'll also bring the wheel and tire so we can figure this out. I did read the yokohama article and it does match up to what I have--Yokohama AVAN-032R. Guess you and I will have some fun with this one.

Jon--great find on the article--thanks! My rims dont have any marks(red) so it looks like i'll use the yellow weighted method.

Can't thank both of you enough.
