Mark1triumph2000 Posted September 30, 2009 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I have a Sylva Striker 1600 XFLOW that in my garage that I started building in '92. I imported it in '99 piecemeal but many life events have prevented me from getting to the registration process. I started rebuilding it with a 711M engine federal block that I found on a farm in PA back in 2000. It certainly looked like it had been buried in a field. Anyway, that was back when there still seemed to be a window in the CA DMV registration process that would allow be register it as a '71 vehicle based on the block (from a '71 Pinto at the latest because that was the last year it was made). I even have all the emissions equipment and the original carb setup. The idea was to get a smog excempt ceritification and then go for a tuned 135HP XFLOW later. Fast forward to '09 and the registration process is as clear as mud. I recently talked to 4 seprate people at CARB and nobody could give me a straight answer. The final resolution was that I had to call a special number and request an expert to call me back within '48 hours. The person on the phone seemed suprised that I knew what to ask for. Well that didn't help because they never called me so I am back to square one. It seems that the law was recently tightened and it may be that the SB100 route is the only avenue for new registrations in CA. Also, it seemed as though it would be the only route to bring in a Seven from out of state. Does anyone have any recent experience with this (new registrations with a XFLOW or an out of state vehicle). It seems like the DMV/CARB is like a magic box that you have to manipulate and open with the correct sequence or it will blow up in your face. Anyway, if I have to go down the SB100 I am sorely tempted to go with a Duratec as I already have the T9 GBOX. It seems I can get a used 2.3L for a couple of k$ and then the route to higher tuning will open up. Really I would like to fit a Cosworth 260 but that is probably a bit rich for my blood. rv-4mike Posted September 30, 2009 Share Posted September 30, 2009 In CA SB100 is the way to go. The downside is the limited number available so be at DMV as early as possible on Jan 2. If you are one of the lucky 500 the rest is all upside. Never worry about smog again. I saw an Ultima this past weekend at the Coronado Speed Festival with CA plates on it courtesy of SB100. Before SB100 there wouldnt have been any legal way possible that I know of to get an Ultima street licensed in CA. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
