andrew7
After I decided to go Bec, the next thought was reverse for PaDOT. I searched and found Quaife reverse boxes, there expensive($1500?) and they do break, which means 100 or 1000 miles from home and you have to wait for the next boat from England. I did check on snowmobile reverse boxes but the shafts are on the same side, so for a Bec the drive shaft would be going forward. I believe Westfield Megabusa had an swing electric motor on the left of the differential. It would turn the left half shaft, but I have a solid axle so mine had to be between the motor and drive shaft. The guy who welded up my aluminum gas tank suggested an atv winch motor with a gear on the spool, with that said half of it was engineered up. A bicycle gears and chain run to a jack shaft and an old set of cam gears. the small cam gear is on the R1 output shaft and the whole unit swings on a hinge. When I pull a lever the cam gears engage and trips the switch and its walking speed in reverse. If I wish to remove it, its 3 bolts and 20# lighter. The chain loosen and jumped off a couple times, that's on the winter TO-DO list but the car ran fine without it till I got home and put the chain back on the gears. The 14000 rpms and paddles make it worth it http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrin5.gif
BusaLoco
I'm curious to find out more about the Westfield electric thing. I know about their (and Caterham,'s) chain reverser (and all their problems), but I haven't seen anything on the web about the electric half haft thing. That idea would really suit my car because I have a fully independent rear suspension. Do you happen to know where I could find out more about Westfield's electric reverser. I haven't found it on their site. Thanks and Cheers! BusaLoco
andrew7
I couldn't find it on my other computer, Busa. All I found was Nova Racing Transmissions, BGH GearTech reverser and JaxPorts in Michigan. All are Boxes. If I run across it I'll post it for you. : Hurray : Wait, I just found Sylva in England Mid-Bec and Stuart-Taylor Motorsports both have electric reverse as an option on their kits. Try them. That Sylva R1iot kit reminds me of a Lotus 340. Maybe thats my next build.
road warrior
Hi Guys I am from Australia and have an MNR Vortx with a Yamaha R1 engine. I have a Muffett Differential from the UK. It has LSD, drop gears to change the final drive and a built in reverse. Expensive but well worth it when you consider everything is in one neat package. Pic of diff on my blog page gallery. >http://www.vortx.bigblog.com.au PS. I know of two MNR's that have been sold to the US but I'm not sure if they were BECs or not. andrew7
For all the BEC guys I'll throw my reverse info out there. A ATV winch, a set of used cam gears without the timing chain, 2 pillow block bearings and shaft, a rear cogset from a road bike and a bike chain, and a door hinge, momentary starter switch, motorcycle lever assembly and mountain bike brake cable. The small cam gear is very close in size to the output shaft of the Bike Engine, put it on first then the driveshaft adapter. A bike cog close in diameter to the winch spool is bolted to the spool, (cutoff 1 side to get gear on spool). The second bike cog of similiar size is adapted to the pillow block shaft and a chain is used to link the two. On the same shaft the other large cam gear is adapted and mounted. A heavy door hinge is mounted on the frame and bolted to the winch motor. The whole assembly swings into and away from the small cam gear on the B.E. output shaft. A hand lever (mine is hidden under the dash)pulls the mountain bike brake cable and swings the gears into position and a lever system locks it in to place then activate a momentary switch. 1 CAVEAT: the gears MUST engage together between 3-6 o'clock on the shaft. The reason is at these positions the 2 gears, cam into each other and hold each other. On top or below on they will push each other away and NO amount of leverage will keep them engaged. This will move me backwards at walking speed but not up large grades and it passes PA. laws. My loose chain jumped a couple times and lost reverse and I still could drive the car everywhere. I've since tighten it up and haven't had any problems. A reverse box is great and I might put one on if someone bought the $1500 unit for me but I have a Locost.
