No cat converter

How does running without a cat con. change the running of an engine? I have a 2001 GMC V8 truck and may need to remove it due to exhaust system pipe failures. Also will I get a Check Engine light all the time?

Why not just fix the problem?

 

Removal of the cat is illegal in most places in the world, and keeping it helps us do our part to take care of the beautiful air we breathe on this planet.

 

You will have a check engine light all the time - the computer continually checks to make sure the cat is there and doing its job.

... also, your fuel consumption and performance will suffer 'cause the computer won't be able to dial in the best mix.

Not illegal here at all but I will keep it and try to get parts needed to fix as your recommendation.

A wee bit more involved than that I'm afraid , there are 2 O2 sensors dependant on the Catalytic in a post 1996 OBD2 system.

First one sets Fuel ratio based on what it reads at the cat., Second one double checks on the first one. Missing either sensor, Let alone the cat will send your ECU into Spasms. Serious fuel consumption and often drivability issues can result.

There are Aftermarket gizmos that can substitute /fool the ECU.. IF you really do need delete the cat. It happens.

Personally I wouldn't be overly swayed by "save the whales" guilt nonsense Given that transport trucks or even buses don't even pretend to.

Aircraft are just a Joke as well.. pumping out 80 %! of the fuel that's injected.
