SCH Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Hi all, Does anyone here know where the serial number is located on a Ford Type 9 five-speed transmission? The transmission itself came out of an XR4Ti, but it's slated to be installed in a Caterham kit. The serial number is going to prove important when I go to register the vehicle. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.
Jackal Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I just went through this with my application to get a VIN, and found that the T9 will very often not have a SN for it. Mine didn't actually have a number on it anywhere. Of course the Trans was in the car so the view was limited.
Off Road SHO Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I have a couple of T-9's out of XR4Ti's sitting out back. I'll take a look and see if there is a serial number on them. Tom
SCH Posted July 28, 2013 Author Posted July 28, 2013 (edited) I just went through this with my application to get a VIN, and found that the T9 will very often not have a SN for it. Mine didn't actually have a number on it anywhere. Of course the Trans was in the car so the view was limited. Thanks for the reply. I've looked all over the transmission and can't seem to find any sign of a serial number. There's lots of casting numbers, but nothing that looks like an engraved and/or unique serial number. I know on T5 transmissions there's a small metal tag with a serial number that's bolted to the side of the case, but there's no such thing on the T9 that I've seen... nor is there any sign that there might have been at any point either. I'll go out and take a look at the transmission again to make sure I haven't missed it. My concern is that it'll get 'flagged' as an issue when I do eventually install it in the car and attempt to register it. Michigan requires documented proof of ownership of an assembled vehicle's major components (engine, transmission, frame, etc...). I bought the transmission used from a reputable shop but didn't get a receipt or Bill of Sale. I'm sure I could get the seller to give me a receipt or sign a Bill of Sale for me (it wasn't that long ago that I bought it) but how would anyone know the transmission in the car is THE transmission I purchased without a serial...? Thanks for the reply. I'd appreciate it if you would look on the T9s you have to see if you can find a serial number. The one I have is in the garage now, and I'll go look at it again to see if I've missed it, but maybe you'll have better luck. Let me know if you find anything. Thanks!
SCH Posted July 28, 2013 Author Posted July 28, 2013 UPDATE: I found it!!! Turns out the serial number is a vertical series of 2 letters and 6 numbers (8 digits in total) on the left hand side of the main casing. It was really hard to see - the years of crud and oxidation have made it almost impossible to make out even in the best lighting conditions. But after a bit of brake clean and some scrubbing with a rag, I managed to make out the faint stamp marks. I took a digital photo of it using the flash so it's easy to make it out now.
