rear axle, rear end, differential ID question

This is something I should know, but I don't.

I don't know what rear end I have in my Birkin.

It is a S3 with a Zetec 2.0L motor with a ford 5-speed tranny. It has rear disk brakes and a reported 4:11 rear end ratio (I have not checked). If it has a LSD, it doesn't work well or at all so I'm guessing peg leg. The lug bolt pattern is 4x100mm, for what that's worth.

What is the best way to go about determining what I have?

Cold weather is setting in and I'm beginning the dreaming about winter upgrade projects. As a result, I'm trying to determine what I really have.

You probably have the South African market only Toyota HiLux axle. From the sound of it, you do not have a LSD. If you can find one, Quaife units are excellent. I believe that Dick Brink, at Texas Motorworks has a different LSD Birkins.

Also, if you haven't already, an upgrade to adjustable spherical bearing ended rods make the rear ride and traction much better. Woody at MSI used to supply a complete kit, but these days you probably need to put it all together from a racing supply shop.

iirc cars up to MY 2000 had 4.11 rear ends and then 3.91 from 2001 up.

I suspect that You'd know it if you did happen to have a Quaife slippy diff...
