  6. Colorado Rockies - Mini Epic Road Tour July 11 - July 15 2016 Disclaimer: --------------------------------------------- This a pay your own way event. This means even me the organizer pays my own way to attend. Organizing drives is my hobby and I enjoy putting the events on. I also pay for the website and store system out of my own pocket to make sharing information and registering easier on everyone. --------------------------------------------- The Epic road trip event is a bi-yearly event that is focused on the spirit of having an adventure and making friends. The first Epic was a week in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in 2013. The second Epic in 2015 was a 10 day grand tour of the many national parks of the southwest states. A rather informal survey concluded that many Participants of these two events could not wait 2 long years until the next Epic, and so here we go. This will be a five day road adventure to drive as many of the scenic mountain roads and highways of the Colorado Rockies. While the focus will be on driving, we will be making stops to check out the scenery, historic small towns and railroads, ski resorts (gondola rides), etc. as time allows. You are welcome to join or leave the event at any point if you are not able to make all five days. With what we have planned, I strongly suggest you attend all five days as this will be one amazing driving adventure. Unlike rallies and road course events, we encourage people to stay in a group and stop at the planned destinations, as this is a road trip not a rally. However, the stops and activities are suggestions, not mandates. Our format is for those individuals, couples or families, who want to have an adventure as well as make new friends with fellow enthusiasts. We mix the day up between driving sections, photo stops and sightseeing opportunities for everyone. This is not a race, so if you are looking for a competitive event this is not for you. NOTE: Rooms are limited and it is first come first serve. So if you wish to go make sure to join ASAP! Admins, the reason for the post in each region is these are national meet ups. A chance to make new friends from across the country and to share in a road tour adventure. Day 1: Monday July 11, Dillon, CO. 7. The Epic Road Trip 2015 was a great success. For those who missed the event you missed a truly EPCI adventure. Over the 10 days the group was together we covered over 1600 miles and saw over nine national parks and three state parks. One thing with these trips is there is no way to really recap all the moments of the event. While the images help show you the sights and who was there, it cannot convey the stories shared and the new stories made. For example everyone there if you ask about Fosters you will hear a great story being told. The images below are just a glimpse of the 9000 images posted to the website. Feel free to explore the images and hope to see you in 2017 for the next Epic Road Trip. See all the images here: http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2015-Epic_Road_Trip/index.html http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2015-Epic_Road_Trip/Adam%20&%20Jen/02%20-%20Day%201%20-%20Hoover%20Dam/slides/20150601_083156.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2015-Epic_Road_Trip/Adam%20&%20Jen/02%20-%20Day%201%20-%20Hoover%20Dam/slides/IMG_1309_stitch.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2015-Epic_Road_Trip/Lisa%20&%20Randy/slides/IMG_2638.JPG http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2015-Epic_Road_Trip/Lisa%20&%20Randy/slides/IMG_2905.JPG
  8. After the lake stop we hit the park. We made stops to see the usual big items before making our way to Yosemite Village for lunch. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Tom/Yosemite%20Valley/slides/DSC_3714.JPG http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20Road%20Trip/slides/IMG_0562.JPG This trip of course had a lot more going on and this recap just touches the surface of what we did. While it was a weekend run we did A LOT. We hope to do this run again but make it a three day run so we have more time to see things. For more details of the trip, see the albums to see all the fun you missed on this trip. Hope to see some of you on future trips.
  9. After Mono Lake we headed to the Devils post pile to see the rock formations there before calling it a day. These rock formation only are seen in a few places around the world so it is well worth the short hike. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20Road%20Trip/slides/IMG_0525.JPG Sunday Recap Today was all about making it to Yosemite. The group first made a detour to June Lake which was very calm and serine. Made for some great shots and a fun little detour before hitting the busy park. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Adam/slides/IMG_0514_stitch.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Adam/slides/IMG_0548_stitch.jpg
  10. Well better late than never. Sorry for the long delay on the event recap. For all the images of the trip see the album link here: http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/index.html Here is a great video from one of the participants. Event Recap: Saturday everyone meet up at the coffee meeting point. There was a little concern as there was a wild fire in El Dorado that was near the route we were going. Thankfully it was well west of the roads we were traveling so all we had was little smoke. The first part of the drive was good. We hit a little traffic as expected but after a short way the road opened up. We made great time and picked up one member of the group in Plymouth as they lived in that area. First stop and restroom break was Merkleeville. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Tom/Markleeville%20Stop/slides/DSC_3623.JPG After Merkleeville we headed over the range to 395 and Mono Lake for lunch. The weather was clear and sunny with just a few wisps of clouds. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Tom/Mono%20Lake%20Visitors%20Center/slides/DSC_3633.JPG Before leaving Mono Lake Visitor center we made a group call to see if we stop and see the Tuffa Rocks. The group said yes and we made a slight plan change to go see the rocks by the lake. We almost had an incident there which you might see in the photos. A Honda parked between two trip members and all of us were wondering what they were thinking. Thankfully no damage to anyone's doors even though you wonder how they got out. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Kevin%20-%20Lana/slides/P1020799.JPG http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Mammoth_Road_Trip/Mammoth%20-%20Adam/slides/IMG_0441_stitch.jpg

All but two cars left as a group to head home back through Feather River Canyon. There was NO traffic in the morning and the group made good time to a rest area where we took a few pictures and said our goodbyes as we then headed off in different directions to make our ways home. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%203%20-%20Home/slides/20140811_085903.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Ben%20Lassen%202014/slides/Ben%20-%20RoadAdvenutres%20Lassen%20%2869%29.jpg

The group made it to Lassen early in the morning and made a stop to hike to Bumpass Hell to see the hot springs and boiling mud pots. After this stop the group had lunch by a lake nearby and then moved on over the pass to see the other sites in the park. After driving the length of the park we regrouped for a return drive back to the visitor center, and then back to Chester where we had a fun farewell dinner on the shores of Lake Almanor. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%202%20-%20Lassen%20Park/slides/01%20-%20Drive%20to%20Lassen%20%281%29.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%202%20-%20Lassen%20Park/slides/01%20-%20Drive%20to%20Lassen%20%283%29.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%202%20-%20Lassen%20Park/slides/02%20-%20Bumpass%20Hell%20Walk%20%2828%29.JPG
  19. See all the event images here: http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/index.html The Lassen trip was another great adventure to see new sights and make new friends. This trip started off a little odd to say the least. We had 13 cars scheduled to go and had 3 people had to bow out at the 11th hour due to various reasons. Then the night before we left, the co leader of the drive lost the alternator on his Porsche on the way to Sacramento. Thankfully we figured out a car solution so that everyone could still go. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Lassen%20Road%20Trip%20-%20John/slides/IMG_5883.JPG The group meet up bright and early Saturday AM where we went over the plans for the day and where we were going. 8:30am hit and a group of BMW’s, Lotus Elise, Opel GT, Jaguar XKR, Mazda RX7, Porsche Turbo, VW Passat, and a Subaru Outback headed North to feather river canyon. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%201%20Potola/slides/01%20-%20Drive%20Up%20%282%29.jpg The day was slightly over cast as we made our way up the Feather River. Those who wanted to go a little faster stayed in the front and the rest of us stayed as a group moving along at a very good pace. We stopped for lunch at a hotel that if you blinked you would miss the turn. After lunch we made our way to Portola to see the train museum and then headed to Chester for the night. http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%201%20Potola/slides/01%20-%20Drive%20Up%20%2815%29.jpg http://www.raddrives.com/albums/2014-Lassen_RoadTrip/Day%201%20Potola/slides/02%20-%20Train%20Museum%20%282%29.jpg

  23. This post is in response to questions on other forums. Q. Why are we going in June? A. A date had to be picked that missed the monsoons, accommodated families, and events out in the world. So first week of June was the best gap to beat the major crowds and the major heat. Q. It going to be too hot right? A. We looked at what average temperatures were for the available dates and going in first of June we will be High 70's low 80's on average - http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatolo.../graph/USAZ0088 Q. What is the deadline? A. February 1st 2015 is the deadline to register for group rates on hotel. This deadline is from the hotels as they need to know if we are really coming or not. After February 1 the deadline to register is March 15th 2015 so things can be mailed out. Q. What if I miss the group hotel rate deadline? A. You will be on your own to book a room either at the hotel we are all at or a alternate hotel. It is worth noting that over the winter most of the hotels close as these are seasonal sights so it will take some time to book as well as cost more. Q. Are the times listed from driving like a hooligan or other? A. The time listed is the average from google maps and map quest. We use known times so we can factor in stops and anything else we want to do. There will be some drivers sections but we don't leave anyone behind so just drive and enjoy. Q. Has anyone signed up? A. Yes, as of this post there are 4 of us paid and ready to go.
