  1. Bummer. I hate those things. But be glad it didn't happen in DC. I got tagged in the 3rd Street tunnel - but the first notification I received was for the amount of the ticket ($60 or something) plus $300 for failure to pay on time. Tried to tell them they never sent me notice the original ticket - - - got the usual DC response - as have lots of other people. Happy I could do my part to help reduce the District's budges shortfall. http://www.emoticonsfree.org/wp-content/uploads/mad0061.gif

  2. Loren,

Thanks for the news flash on the Fireball. Good to hear Kevin and Michelle are enjoying themselves. Must be odd for them to be in one of these events driving something with a top and a radio. Reminds me of the year Robert Dubler showed up for One Lap in a Tahoe and finished mid-pack.

  3. Just to add an interesting note to this discussion, John Meyers recently finished near the top of the heap at the '10 GRM Ultimate Track Car Challenge in his V8 Stalker. This from John:

"I just finished unloading the car and putting it away in my garage. The rear slicks measure about 71.5 inches in circumference. Review of the data logger showed max RPM at the end of the back straight on my quickest lap of 6469 RPM. This calculates to about 169.5 MPH. Now I know why I was not watching the tach more closely .

    John

PS: If I could prove that the tire circumference grew 1/4" at speed and there was no slippage, the speed would equal the magic 170 MPH."

  4. Jeff Duncan (Ultralite) and I (Super Stalker) go at it regularly at a highly competitive autocross at the Cumberland MD airport. This event regularly attracts people that are only interested in FTD rather than class wins. Last weekend’s event was fairly typical – Jeff beat me on Saturday and I edged him on Sunday. And we were both among the fastest in a very fast field of cars. Driven well, either of these cars is extremely capable, though the characteristics are different as noted in earlier posts. Here are links to the Sat. & Sun. results:

PS - And Mazda, how come we haven't seen you up in Cumberland with your spanky new hood?????

  5. Michael,

Have you decided which FIA you're going with? ERA, Unique, Kirkham? If you swing by the Vienna Inn on a sunny Saturday you can usually catch an ERA. If not autoxing the Stalker, I'll be there with my Unique.

  6. Our local Cobra replica group has a tradition of a New Years Day cruise down into DC, through Georgetown, around the mall, and then on to some local watering hole for libations. Since the roads were wet and salty on New Years Day, we cleverly rescheduled the event for Sunday. Brilliant! Temp was 14 degrees when I left the house and never got above the low 20s. The wind chill at 70mph was truly inspiring!

When I got home, I had one errand I needed to run. Since I was already "acclimatized," and since the Stalker needed some exercise, out it went. My wife said nothing, but the look I got suggested she'd already made several call inquiring about psychiatric help. All in all, an enjoyable if somewhat chilly day.

  7. Danny,

Good to meet you and see your car in action in Bowie on Saturday. With the slicks, it looked like it handled quite well. And BTW, that was a nice 360 in the afternoon right at the corner I was working. Very impressive!

  8. The competition in Cumberland on Saturday was brutal, with the top 20 being about as fast as I can ever remember. Very intense! Jeff Duncan and his Ultralite snagged 6th. I was only about .3 seconds slower, but that put me down in 9th. Bill Smith continued to sort out his recently completed bike-engined Locost, and his co-driver brought it home in 25th place – definitely a good showing given the depth of the field.

Sunday I fared better, finishing in 3rd. Jeff had an invasion of internal gremlins that kept taking him from full power to silence throughout his runs. He still managed to finish 12th, which is amazing given what he had to contend with.

Mazda – we missed you! Hope you can make both Saturday and Sunday next month. And again, it would be nice if some of the other area Se7ens made the show.

  9. Mazda,

It was great having you and Arya up in Cumberland. You both ran quite well. Sorry I wasn't able to stick around for the 4th heat - my bride had advised me to be home for dinner, and failure on my part would have led to grave (maybe literally) consequences.

Jeff crushed me this weekend - I've got to figure out a way to speed up my heap or disable his.

  10. The monsoons cleared over the weekend in time for Mazda’s debut of Franken7 at Cumberland. The sight of a no-hood Seven with an LS1 stuffed into it certainly drew a crowd. Kinda like Pamela Anderson in a skimpy . . . well, you get the drift.

Saturday was a very long course, with most people running in the 80-90 second range. After a couple of off-courses, Mazda found the way and notched a solid 90 second run. Jeff Duncan was on fire, and ran a 74.9 in his Ultralite for 4th overall, behind one B Mod and two C Mod cars. I couldn’t stay with him and settled for 10th overall with a 76.9.

On Sunday’s shorter course, Jeff and I ran neck in neck all day (Mazda had to head home the night before), and I had my revenge, edging him out 50.0 versus 50.3 for 6th and 9th overall respectively. The competition at the top of the heap was pretty intense – 5th through 16th places all had times of 50.xxx.

It was great having Mazda join us, and hopefully more of the PA, MD and VA Sevens can make some of the remaining Cumberland events. Great venue, good people, and fast courses that suit our cars.

  11. Mazda,

Will we be seeing you in Cumberland at the June event? Hope so. BTW, Jeff Duncan needs some stiffer competition - last month he was 3rd overall on Saturday and FTD on Sunday. Sheesh! I may have to resort to preppinng his slicks with a fine mist of WD 40.
