Donnie Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Is there anyone out there who is able and willing to set up a LSD rear for my Seven? Actually a Cortina Mk. 2 rear. Bought a Quaife LSD from the UK but was surprised to find that no one I contacted was willing to set it up for me. I have a comprehensive shop manual but am reluctant to tackle it myself. I live in East Tennessee but am willing to travel or ship as needed. Thanks for any help and Happy Holidays to all my Seven brothers. Don
James A Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Don, are you looking for help installing the LSD in to the differential?
Donnie Posted December 25, 2014 Author Posted December 25, 2014 Don, are you looking for help installing the LSD in to the differential? I am. And set up.
rzempel Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 I'm on the wrong coast to help, but in my experience the Quaife was a direct replacement--no shimming required. I've heard this from others, as well.
Donnie Posted December 26, 2014 Author Posted December 26, 2014 Thanks for the input. I consider myself a pretty competent mechanic but, although I have a factory manual, I figured it might be best to let someone specifically experienced so as to have someone else to blame if something goes wrong. As I'm sure you're aware, extracting the rear is something you'd rather not do twice. Cheers Don
rzempel Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 extracting the rear is something you'd rather not do twice. I dunno. Once done, it isn't nearly so intimidating.
James A Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Yes, Quaife is a direct replacement and very easy to install.
Ut7owner Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Another vote for Quaife being a pretty easy install and a direct replacement. I've done two of them with good results (though not on a Cortina rear axle). I did measure the back lash with a dial indicator on both units, before and after the swap. I don't recall the actual numbers but the before and after readings were within one or two thousandths of being exactly the same. Have at it, the worst you could find is that you have to put the original diff back in and go back to searching for someone to do it for you.
Donnie Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Thanks everyone for the input. I also felt that it would be doable until I found that no shop in my area would touch it. I'm thinking now that its a matter of unfamiliarity. I actually spoke to a shop manager at a local Ford dealer that had never heard of a Cortina. Think I'll just go at it.
rzempel Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 That's the spirit. Keep track of which spacer was on each side...I didn't (they both popped out and rolled away) and ended up pulling the Quaife again when I put the spacers in the wrong sides. Not a big deal, but annoying.
James A Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 If you decide to send it out, Taylor Driveline Services has built up diffs and gearboxes for me and done excellent work: https://www.facebook.com/TaylorRacePreparation
craig chima Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Donnie, If you are simply looking for someone to set up a Quaife unit in your existing diff, I am happy to help with that assuming it is a standard English Ford unit. Have done dozens of those. You can contact me tomorrow (Monday) at chima97@aol.com or 330 807 0742. Craig Chima/CC Motorsports. Akron, OH. I am leaving on vacation on Tues for about 12 days so will be out of touch for awhile if you don't make contact on Monday but it is a simple job assuming that your existing diff is in good working order. Craig
Donnie Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 That's the spirit. Not a big deal, but annoying. Actually, the differential unit that I am replacing is a Detroit Locker. There are no spacers. I assume that spacers will be needed if there is side to side movement greater than spec.
