kayentaut
As I mentioned in my previous post, I am trying to find out who built the 2.0 Zetec engine in my Superlight R. The engine has a hand stamp on the engine block: 1 CUSA 012. The obvious guess is CUSA might stand for Caterham USA, which might imply Jon Nelson built the engine. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks, Jim Hi Guys, I am the new owner of Duncan’s Superlight R. The car has just been picked up in PA and is on its way to my home in Southern UT. I am a previous Caterham Superlight owner, having owned Superlight #49; in fact the badge is still in my garage. I sold the car when I moved to Japan in 2005 and have regretted it many times. I am excited to be a Caterham owner again, with plans for some modifications immediately. The first two things I want to do are: 1) replacing the windshield with an aero screen and 2) have a “form in place” seat made. At 6’3” and 220lbs, there is no way I can fit in the beautiful carbon Kevlar seats. Once I get have the car home, I am hoping this forum can help me find out who built the engine. Both Duncan and I tried to get more info, but to date have come up empty. I’ll post pics later after the car arrives. Jim
kayentaut
Mystery solved, Jon Nelson confirmed the stamp means the engine was built by Caterham USA. Jon is going to try to provide me more details on the specifications. Jon still has parts and a couple of kits for sale, but currently does not have much time to devote to Caterham because of business travel. He can still be reached at jon@caterhamusa.com
Jesse D
One of the things that I have given a lot of thought to is that the Superlight comes with carbon fiber bucket seats with very little padding. This is not a car that was particularly built for comfort but for speed and laser like handling. Given what Kitcat said about the suspension and I have heard from others, it is not designed to provide a gentle ride like a Miata. As a data point for you, I replaced the seats in my 1993 Caterham (which I bought happily off an ad here-http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?9612-For-Sale-1993-Caterham-HPC) with the Tillett unpadded fiberglass seats for Caterhams and I have been very pleasantly surprised with the comfort level. I planned on getting padding but to date haven't felt the need, and that includes a few country drives on roads not in the best shape.
CASwede
Keep us posted for when you feel like selling the current seats. I'm looking to swap my bench seats for some high back seats.
kayentaut
CASwede, I have had several requests to buy the seats. I am only replacing the driver's seat with the FIP seat, the passenger seat will remain as it is. I will keep the drivers seat in case a) someone else wants to drive my car or b) I ever sell the car. Thanks, Jim
