Thanks Dave, that helps a lot. I'm 76 and have never developed much experience in translating how the car feels and how it is set up. I've never autocrossed another car except for fun. My grandson, who comes from karting, was faster than me at his first event, and has much better ideas, so we'll begin and see what's up. Avon is out of business, soon to be Nova (see the thread in tires and wheels). I put Hoosiers on as my first slicks, but much preferred the Avons. 12 lbs of pressure all around wears them out evenly switching front and back between events. We run mostly on concrete runway aprons.

They are Avon AV3146s, which I believe is bias ply. On their second year, I bought them from Roger Kraus just as Avon went out of business. Replacement is one of our issues at some point this summer.

Asking here as I don't see much action in the Autocross section (heck I only scrolled down that far for the first time last summer). Move to the autocross heading if appropriate. I have a 1993 Caterham HPC with a Vauxhall that I have been autocrossing the last several years , using Avon slicks on 13x8 wheels with a square setup. Last summer my grandson joined me and we are working on the setup of the car. I drive maybe 1,000 miles on the road for fun . Our locations are bigger than most- a racetrack in NH, Loring AFB with a 2 mile runway and the apron of the old Navy airport in Brunswick. I just bought a new de Dion rear end and a wide track front end with new Nitron adjustable shocks all around. We have hub stands, plates and scales and I'm looking for toe in and camber settings mostly. and any other advice. I have no idea how it was setup before and we have replaced everything. As an aside, SCCA has begun running events in Brunswick, so they consider it a good location if anyone wants to come to Maine in the summer. Loring is a long drive but an amazing place (an abandoned SAC base) and Northern Maine is unique.

The only metal is two little prongs to center the seat bases- the oarlocks are plastic, the oars are aluminum. All up, maybe 20 lbs. It displaces so little water that it is awkward until you get in:-) The sailboat I made it to serve is a racing/cruising multihull, which is the Lotus of boats. Simplify and add lightness was my sailing motto.

I built a boat out of frame and fabric- I suppose flutter could be a problem but it gets plenty tight with a heat gun and varnish resists marring on the outside.

4 New wheels and Avon ZZS tires - Re listed
Jesse D replied to Bartman's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
I think Bartman isn't a regular on the site- I bought these tires/wheels from him earlier this winter, sorry. -

My autocross club does an event at Canaan now- we will be there next year on June 27-28. I'll have my Cat there and it's a fun group- your daughter would be welcome too. Cumberland Motor Club- find us on Facebook -
I've got a nice rig for when I autocross far from home (we run one event right at the top of Maine and that's a long drive and very remote). The trailer is from Pro-Line in New Hampshire (different company from the other Pro-Line), a very nice all aluminum snowmobile trailer modified to my specs and perfect for a Seven. They only sell direct I think.

I picked up a Caterham - does anybody know its history?
Jesse D replied to masanski's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Just a guess, but reach out to Chris Tchorznicki, at Sevens and Elans. http://www.sevenselans.com/about.htm Chris was located in Massachusetts (Ayer) for many years and either built or knew of most Sevens in New England -
Would like some advice about selling a Caterham
Jesse D replied to Saudio's topic in General Sevens Discussion
When I bought my Cat it was in November- a car listed here whose owner dropped the price and indicated he wanted it gone by winter. The Z3 I sold to buy it went on the market the following spring- I was trying to take advantage of the "Sell a convertible in the Spring, buy it in the Fall" theory, and did. Your car is more particular so I think listing here makes sense and BaT in the spring if necessary. -

Chris found one for me a few years ago as well. -
About to Purchase First 7 and Need Advice!
Jesse D replied to Randy Flowers's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Fun to read all of us justifying our toy. I bought mine (off the classifieds here) about ten years ago and I have no interest in selling and it was one of the best things I did in my life. My oldest grandson (I'm 74) is close to his driver's license and then I'm looking forward to autocross with him. My Caterham is a 1993 and the problems I've had are minimal and the joy maximal. Get it. -
New Avon ZZS on new Compromotive CXR rims
Jesse D replied to Bartman's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
Sent you a private message, but I'd take just the wheels or wheels and tires. Can you get an approximate price on sending the wheels or the wheels and tires to Maine. -
If you just get the daily email you see everything. I get 7 and autocross shirts for myself and others plus shirts as gifts for friends that mean something to them and nothing to me. At my winter autocross party last weekend, two youngsters noticed this shirt for me- I guess I've been around the club long enough.

When one of mine burst My local NAPA dealer allowed me to go behind the desk and look at the rack of hoses and I found one that with a little trimming fit my 93 Caterham perfectly well. I just took my burst hose as a template.

13" Kodiak Lightweight three piece wheels
Jesse D replied to Doug7L's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
Thanks, I'm looking for a square setup at least 8-9" width. My current tires (Avon slicks) rub in the rear and I didn't like spacers with my studs. Thanks for the links. -

Thanks, that doesn't quite work for me, drat. -

Can you confirm the wheel widths and the offsets- I might be interested in just the wheels. -
Effective wind deflector/buffeting reduction?
Jesse D replied to Cueball1's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I switched from a regular windshield to Brooklands screens on my 93 several years ago and it is a big improvement, though I can't put the top up. Much less buffeting and I can wear a baseball cap up to about 65 mph. Just my regular glasses, never hit anything. -
Front license plate required in Oregon
Jesse D replied to Cueball1's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Ha. Normally the slicks come off for road driving but it was only a short trip, Officer, and look it's sunny out and no chance of rain. The reality is as long as I'm moving it's hard to tell they're slicks and the rest of the car draws more attention. It's Maine after all. -
Front license plate required in Oregon
Jesse D replied to Cueball1's topic in General Sevens Discussion
One of the advantages of gel coat vs paint is that the holes can be glassed over and red gel coat smoothed into the surrounding area in an invisible way that you can't do with paint. -
Front license plate required in Oregon
Jesse D replied to Cueball1's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I used some carbon tubes to make a lightweight easy to remove plate holder. I glued/laid up some slightly larger tubes on the inside of my grill piece and made a bracket from two tubes and some carbon plate. All easily available from carbon suppliers. The plate never moves when in place and is plenty strong. Weight measured in ounces. -
I took off my metal screens and went with film- I replace it each year but the fiberglass underneath is fine.

Effective wind deflector/buffeting reduction?
Jesse D replied to Cueball1's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I put on Brookland screens. Can't put the top up but completely ended the buffeting and I can wear a ball cap up to 60 mph. -
While we are on the subject, what have people been buying in a smaller size like 5 3/4 or even smaller. My big ones are like the yellow/red ones pictured- bottom mount.
