Duratec 2.5 crank holder

I need to reinstall crankshaft damper/crank pulley on Duratec 2.5, I think it is the same as 2.3. Anyway I have torques specs (74 ft/lbs then 90 degrees more), got ARP bolt and washer, have everything lined up, bolt in side of block tool on back of cams, tensioner in place cams torqued to spec. 6mm bolt in hole through pulley into timing chain cover. What is the proper way to hold the crank stationary while doing this?

Are there not two threaded holes in the damper right next to the center hole? I made a tool that bolts to these two holes yet still has enough room in the middle for a deep socket to reach the center bolt for torquing procedures (and easy removal too). It was for a SHO motor but the priciple is the same if you have those two threaded holes.

Got it torqued using just the timing bolt, cam locating tool and the indexing bolt on the crank damper/pulley plus a big ole screwdriver on the flexplate to take some of the strain off.

Are you doing this with the engine installed in the car? If so, you would probably want the factory tool, a rectangular steel plate about 20"x4". It is drilled to accept two large bolts (nominally 1/2x4") that fit between the webs on the pulley. The other end has a ½" square hole for a breaker bar. This would hold the pulley and relieve the pressure on the alignment bolt on the nose of the engine while you apply torque to the crank bolt. I have one if you need to borrow it.

 

If the engine is out of the car and the bell housing is removed, Go to a VW parts shop and purchase a flywheel holder. Shouldn't be more than $10. This will bolt to a bell housing attach point and it's teeth will lock the rotation of the flywheel. It's not a perfect fit but it works. As an old FV racer, I had one in the bottom of the drawer.
