Birkin owners

Have  any of our Birkin owners ever had to replace the outer CV joints? I'm looking for a part number or vehicle model and year. I think that I have searched every database available to no avail. These are clearly stamped with the VW and AUDI logos inside the outer housing. 22 outer spline/32 inner spline, 139mm overall length with a 90mm diameter. Tom Carlin is looking into it as well. Most likely from a ROW car that was only imported to South Africa.

Thanks

Is the answer to your question in your other thread Outer cv joint info?

It looks like a standard Mk1/Mk2 VW outer CV joint.  Except not quite....

I have some donor Mk1 outer CV joints for putting weight on the wheels without needing to have driveshafts installed.  They fit both Mk1 Rabbit and early Mk2 Golf.  They measure:

22 outer splines, 24.1mm outer diameter

30 inner splines, 23.8mm inner diameter

80.9 outer bearing race diameter

~130mm overall length

When I was in South Africa in 2008 I saw lots of "new" Mk1 Golf's, aka, Rabbits.  Oh to have a new Rabbit!

Mk1 Golf's, aka, Rabbits, had "90mm" diameter CV joints.  That refers to the flange diameter at the transmission.

Higher powered Mk2 Golf's, aka, GTI had "100mm" diameter CV joints, ostensibly for the higher power.

The driveshafts are generally interchangeable at the outboard (hub) side.  Just slightly different lengths because different track widths between Mk1 and Mk2 Golf.  Then of course the aforementioned difference in inner CV joint diameter.

Probably what you're describing is simply a later model Mk2 Golf CV joint.  Which is probably what came on all those new Rabbits I saw in South Africa.  VW keeps things simple and common.  Birkin probably used what was most common on the market, which was all those "new" Rabbits from close to 15 years ago.

Tom Carlin has done a LOT of research on this and has arranged for a supplier to provide a number of "custom" cv's. They will have the 90mm outer with a 22 spline and the inner "star" with a 32 spline. This will match up to the splines on the standard  Birkin half shaft. He should have them in stock soon. The 90mm bodies also have to have the outer body turned down on a lathe in order to fit the inside of the Birkin hub assembly.

  • 2 years later...

These CV joints are early ROW Golf CV joints that have had the back side machined down to conform to the Birkin hub assembly. Tom should have a few on the shelf if needed.
