Anybody familiar with Suzuki Swift or Samurai transmissions?

Hello everybody,

I have not posted in a while but was thinking about overdrive and reverse mechanism's for my BEC and the idea hit me of incorporating a Samurai 5 speed trans in my driveline to use reverse and 5th gear. From what I can find they are lightweight and if I can gut one (or a Datsun 210) to just use it as an overdrive and reverse it would kill 2 birds with one stone. I have been playing with an old Laycock and Normanville overdrive unit but a modified lightweight 5 speed might work better for similar or less effort. Anybody got any suggestions for lightweight 5 speed transmissions? I think a RWD trans would probably have better packaging than an FWD but I will consider everything.

Thanks,

For the size, might consider a pinto 4 speed unless you want the full over drive. Pinto is 1-1. Hard to beat at the weight though, and some folks make different gears if you want to go that route so you could probably get an overdrive 4th.

Not sure how busy he is but Mike over at Currie's in Chanitily, VA knows his Suzuki's farly well. He owns a few and may be able to provide some other options. He can come up with some crazy swaps. FYI the X90 uses the exact same motro as the Swift GTi did with a RWD transmission, guess where I learned that. If you have a free weekday maybe it would be worth the drive over get an oil change and see if you can pick his brain. Just don't bring up his Exige....
