slngsht Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 today was my older son's league championship game. They completed their undefeated season by coming back from behind. down 8-3 bottom of the 5th, we scored 6 runs, then struck out first 3 batters on top of 6th to finish up the game. All season long our kids had been winning without really paying attention. today's 5th inning, everybody was up against the dugout fence, cheering each other on and jumping up and down.
solder_guy Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Congratulations! I remember the feeling when my daughter's soccer team went undefeated and won the state championship when she was in 5th grade. Funny .. kids get all kinds of participation trophys these days .. but she has only one championship trophy! She still plays team soccer .. now to be in the 10th grade this fall. Rob
slomove Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 What are you guys all doing to get your kids to be so motivated. I think I failed.... My son tried soccer when he was 6, not his cup of tea. He tried Basketball when 8, no interest. Tried guitar paying when 10, only for short time. Tried Boy Scouts and dropped it after 2 years. No interest in school clubs of any kind. He was a bit successful at fencing in High School (I guess a few attractive girls there), got really good grades and an excellent SAT score. But his lack of motivation to accomplish anything beyond the minimum to survive is frustrating. Now he is Junior at UCSB in Political Science and German. Still very good grades but no idea what to do. Theoretically interested in an international internship but applying would be so much work. He just told us he might sign up as a cop. Oh dear..... P.S.: Sorry about the rant.
slngsht Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 I completely understand the rant. of my 2 boys, the older one is exactly like that. bare minimum. the younger one has an attitude, but also tries very hard and is a quick learner. The older one could LOVE something, but as soon as you mention the words learning or practice, it's a turn-off. The younger one would fall of the bike and be bleeding, and he would get back on on his own and try again. kids are just different. This season with baseball we just had a few awesome players. They led the way, but the rest of the kids took their lead and improved greatly on their own. That made it very rewarding. Here are some pics from one of the parents. Take a look at pic #33. He was our ace pitcher. He's in 3rd grade, but the top of his head is already at my mouth. http://bit.ly/jZFrQ
solder_guy Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Nice pics ! Yes they grow up fast! And are so different in temperment .. My daughter takes piano lessons .. but hates to practice and fusses about it even though she has been taking lessons since 1st grade. She is a little more motivated about soccer now because she didn't make the team one year ago. And she and her friends have stuck with Girl Scouts because they are such good friends since the beginning of elementary school. BTW: I had a birthday recently and my daughter gave me a card which consists of her own art work .. the two of us in the Seven and both saying "woo hoo!" She's at summer camp this week .. so I've been typing email and sending her letters. (The camp prints out email to campers.) Lots of jokes like .. NY: Boy with cancer bankrupts the Make-A-Wish Foundation by wishing for unlimited wishes! Rob
