Tom, what level of power will the ZX2 stock intake manifold support?

Can a stage 3 Comp Cam and a 65mm single throttle body work with the stock manifold and head?

TIA.

You cant use the Focus 65mm TB on the ZX2 intake manifold and I dont know of a 65mm for the ZX2 , you can make an adaptor for it

You could change to a 2000 ZX3 intake and then use the 65mm Focus TB , the intake manifolds are the same as for where they bolt to the head it mostly depends on what fuel rail you have and you would have to madify the throttle linkage but not a big deal

I like the comp stg3 cams and they are VERY streetable

Thanks for the quick reply. More questions:

1) Do you recommend deleting the VCT with the stage 3 cam?

2) Will the stock fuel pump and injectors support 200 hp?

TIA

If you have the ZX2 head with VCT the STG3 Exh cam will not work the VCT heads take a special ECH cam , the best thing to do is switch over to a Focus head it is a direct replacement and flows the same as the ZX2

The best ported head money can buy is the Ford Racing head , there are some other on ebay by s Company that claim better flow but have never been able to produce any better HP/TQ then the Ford Facing head

You dont have to go to a ported head if it isnt in the budget just a stock Focus head works and will make the same power as the ZX2 head

Surface it and go to 10.0 compression and gain an easy 8-10+HP depending on mods , you will have to run 93 all the time and a good tune but well worth the cost

You fuel pump should be fine but I would look for a set of 30lb Inj , the Focus SVT has 30lb and the Focus sites (focusfanatics.com) have them for sale all the time at a good deal

You wont see 200HP at the wheels , maybe you were talking flywheel

Ok , what kind of bridge do you have ? Not sure what point you were trying to make ?

If you do some looking before insulting you will see my Engines , tuning is time proven , If you would like more information all you have to do is ask

Tom, thanks for the info again. Yes, I was talking about crank hp rather than wheel hp. I own my own engine dyno and I only talk crank hp. This is the first time I have ever owned a Ford engine, so I am trying to get up to speed to learn about them.

With the Ford ECU (1998 model), is it a smart unit? Does it "learn" as it goes? I assume it runs open loop at wide open throttle and closed loop other times. Do you know what target air/fuel ratio the factory uses? I ran the car at a hillclimb and a track day recently and the tail pipe does not clean up at all. I suspect it comes from the factory pretty rich.

The ECU has adaptive learning but not sure is that is what your talking about

Closed loop is for idle and part throttle and open loop os for WOT or anything past 550 counts TPS , Air fuel for CL is set to 14.7 and OP is set for about 13.2 depending on your ECU code

The ECU will not learn WOT OL fueling so when anything is changed (header , intake etc) you have to set your WOT fueling

I am very good tuning the stock ECU remotely if you need any help , if you want to do your own tuning a SCT Pro Racer Package would be a good start

My Dyno that I own is a Dynojet so I only talk HP/TQ at the wheels because in the end that the only place to me its important

Over at the Focus Forum, they consider you the guru on factory ECU remote tune. I will certainly be interested in your service should I decide to go ahead with the engine work this winter. All my experience was with Haltec units rather than factory ECUs.

I believe the ECUs on the U.S. Caterham Zetecs were recalibrated. I heard Quicksilver Engines were the original company that did the engine program for Caterham USA. They might have gone with a much richer air fuel ratio than necessary.

If I go ahead, I will most likely just go with the Ford Racing head as per your recommendation.

Thanks again for the information you provided over the last few days.

I am glad I could help , With the checking I have done I have yet to find a Ford ECU in a Caterham with any Ford Engine that had any tune changes in it

All of them were knocking like crazy (knock sensor pulling timing) and running slightly lean which I would expect with the better flowing header and Exh

A big problem is the knock sensor in a lot of the ZX2 / Contour ECU codes is turned off from the factors so there engines are not protected by the knock sensor add running lean to that and it isnt good
