How much space between front fender and tire?

How much space do people have between their front cycle fenders and the tire? In theory you could have an inche but that would be pushing it.

Thaks in advance,

I fabricated new wings stays last year and used 1.5" thick pieces of lumber (a.k.a. 2x4) as spacer on the tire to cut and tack weld the tubes in place. Works pretty well.

You can probable go 1" depending on the side overhang. If it gets too tight you won't get the wheel out from under the wing. Or you must provide for an easy method of removing the wing but that would be a pain in the arse.

How much space from the fender lip to the side wall of the tire do you have. The fenders I got from vicfibetech and not giving me much space side to side for my 185.60.14 tires. Maybe a 1/2 each side so I am thinking the fender will have to go up a bit like 3 to 4 inches. Looking at a bunch of Caterham pic the seem to have more than that.

Between the sidewall and the fender stays I have no more than 1/4" clearance. With the R888s in 205/50-15 one stay actually touches until the raised letters wear off a bit.

From the top of the tire to the underside of the fender is about 1.5 - 2". I put the top of the tire under the fender first and then rotate the bottom in to get the wheel on the studs.

After getting some valuable input from scannon on wheel adapters, I mounted 4x100 adapters on my hubs, 22 mm thick, to mount my Miata race wheels with Hoosier 205 50 r 15 for track events or the Toyo T1R 195-55 r 15 for street use. I ordered the taller stays from Caterham USA and just remounted the original wings on them. I now have 1/4" sidewall clearance to the stay and 1.5" between the top of the tire and the bottom of the wing, maybe 7/8" between the tire and the bottom of the stay tube.

Also, I got some custom made fenders from Fenders N More in California that are 10" wide aluminum, 0.090 thickness, for when using the Hoosier tires on the track. 9" wide would have been a better choice but these will work just as well. Cost of the fenders including shipping was $178 for the two fenders. They'll make whatever you want in terms of width or radius. Their work is great. Anyone wanting some should contact them sales@fendersnmore.com It took them about 3 weeks to get them to me from the time I ordered them. They can also make them in polished stainless steel for those who don't care about the extra weight and want the shiny look.
