Ruadhd2
My new Toyo R888's have a tag warning against storing or using at under 32 degees F. Also, tag suggests mounting them over 68 degrees, Anyone abiding by or ignoring these requirements? My garage is unheated, and winter temps reach in the teens here near DC. SkinnyG
Years ago I bought a set of used RA-1's that were outside, on the car, on the open trailer, in the snow. They took me to autocross "Class Champion" and "Top Gun," in the car I had at the time (against V700's and A032R's). They did not crack. I understand that the R888 may use the same compound..... But I would store them in the house, not out in the cold. I currently store my slicks (one set Goodyear, one set Hoosier) in the basement.
Boxologist
there was an advisory from Toyo a number of years ago. Caveat Emptor. Mine stay indoors in a basement during the winter if I expect to need them for the next year.
Jon W.
Are you sure your garage temp drops below freezing? In PA, my attached, insulated, usually unheated garage never drops below freezing. Close but not below. My R888s stayed in the garage one season with no problems, but I now put in basement to be safe. Treadzone says the tires are raced with temps as low as 40 degrees and do fine. athens7
I've run Toyo R1Rs for the last 2 years. They have the same warnings/installation suggestions. My non-climate controlled garage has kept them just fine, including through last winter's 8" snowstorm that stayed on the ground for a week (pretty extreme for Georgia). Just leave a light bulb on, say a 60 watter incandescent and see what happens. :hat: I stored my Birkin on Kumho V700s in an unheated garage. Nothing unusual happened. Since I don't actually race or time attack, I wasn't too particular. m
sdca7
A friend suggested putting racing tires in plastic bags as well, to lengthen their usefulness if they are going to be stored for a while. Something about tires out-gassing some component of their petroleum-based composition. Sort of like keeping them from drying out, I suppose. gjslutz
Just to be on the safe side, my V700's and R888's never see temps below 40'. I have the Falken's for cold and wet weather. They are harder, but much better in the wet. As I have 15" wheels the selection on width and profile is limited with them.
The Stig
I have RA-1s on the car and although kept in an unheated garage, the temperature never went close to freezing. I used 888's previously and they were OK too. Having said that I am sure warmer is better I always used to keep my slicks wrapped in cling wrap but mainly to keep them dust and dirt free - even when on the car until I needed them.
