  1. It shouldn't be an issue and I'd thought of using the engine prior to deciding on the the RST-V8. It would be great to see one in a Caterham.

The new Zenos E10 (Ansar Ali's new company) is using that engine (non-turbocharged, 2.0L). It's on the cover of EVO magazine right now and there are some pretty good shots of the engine inside. We can source this crate engine for you if you decide to pursue it.

  2. It looks to be the standard R300 one by Caged. I recognize it from climbing through the top enough times in the rental one I use overseas.

    Yep, it is.

Here is a picture of mine:

  3. How does the Hartley V-8 compare to the RST V-8 in (1) power; (2) weight; (3) dimensions; (4) price; and (5) availability?

    Anyone know off-hand?

The rights to the Hartley H1 were sold in 2012. The H1 used to be a value compared to the RST-V8, being US sourced, now it is considerably more expensive and does not come with a Caterham-specific package.

    H1

    • 2.8L 75° V8
    • 84mm Bore X 63mm Stroke
    • 4 cam, 32 valves chain-drive
    • 530mm wide x 485mm long x 530mm high
    • 400HP @ 10,000 rpm
    • 245 ft-lbs torque @ 7500 rpm
    • 200 lbs engine weight
    • Billet flat-plane crank
    • Dry sump 0il system with 4 stage pump

    RST-V8

    • 2.4L 90º V8
    • 78mm Bore X 69mm Stroke
    • 4 cam, 40 valve belt-drive
    • 552mm wide x 550mm long x 450mm high
    • 400HP @ 10,000 rpm
    • 200 ft-lbs torque @ 7800 rpm
    • 163 lbs engine weight
    • Billet flat-plane crank
    • Dry sump 0il system with 5 stage pump

    Hopefully that side-by-side proves insightful.

  4. It is an EU5 480. 240Hp duratec, with EU-compliant mirrors. Those mirrors are not what will be sold here.

All SV chassis vehicles have the open top Nosecone, with venting of waste air out the top.

NACA duct is for engine intake air.

    Available in the US?

To build on what has already been said, EU5 homologated car is called the Seven 485. The same car will be brought to the US as the Seven 480. Caterham explained, while I was in the UK, that the "5" designation is intended for the EU5 cars.

Here is a internet-sourced picture of the setup:

I'll have more detailed shots of my own to post when I get around to the blog.

You can see the drive by wire pedal box (look for the bump) next to the flexible intake tube. Clean setup.

  5. Engine Specifications:

    120º 24-valve V6

    500+ hp

    273 ft lb torque

    183 lbs.

    Rotrex supercharged

    10,000 rpm

Internally driven dry sump oiling system.

What may not be as transparent is how LOW the engine sits - it's almost a flat 6 with that bank angle!

In the mean time, enjoy the supercharged madness!

  6. I believe that is the super wide-track aftermarket suspension that used to be available for the S3, from a supplier in UK.

The rear deDion set-up is taken from the SV.

Sean on this list has a similar set-up on his S3, but i believe without the extra-wide rear wings

I believe that the inboard suspension and *maybe* wide-track front suspension was engineered by the no longer in business Freestyle. I seem to remember that these components can still be sourced, however. I'm not all that knowledgeable beyond this information, but remember Sean showing me his setup at the S. CA Mt. Palomar assault. What's not to like about an inboard suspension S3? :)

  7. How does the Hartley V-8 compare to the RST V-8 in (1) power; (2) weight; (3) dimensions; (4) price; and (5) availability?

    Anyone know off-hand?

Also, i believe there is an RST V-6 that has been developed, or is under development right now.....

I can assemble some objective information comparing the two engines. They are both great. However there are a few reasons why we made a conscious decision to invest in the RST-V8.

As far as availability, The Adrenaline Gallery is working with RS Performance, so these engines are now much more easily available in the US. Once you move past availability, the next - very real - challenge is implementation. We're working to overcome this and make the components available in a "kit" form so that this power plant can be as plug and play as possible - still with room for individualization.

The EVO V6 engine IS available and actually has been installed in a s3 Caterham. I have an iPhone video I will work to upload. While crude, you can still see the supercharged low-sitting 120ºV in all it's awesomeness shine thought. More to come on that front (I'll start another thread, in time).

    Stay tuned...

  8. Vertigo!

    9.jpg

Not the best view, but you can make out the 3 intake valves here (she's a 40 valve engine).

Here is what she weighs with all ancillaries (starter, alternator, dry sump, flywheel, dual-plate clutch, belts, etc.) and including the bell housing.

232.4 lbs. / 105.4 kgs. Light enough for a single person to pick up themselves!

  9.

Too cool. Thanks for the explanation, I hope videos with high quality audio will be avail once everything is buttoned up.

    I found this

Until I have something more to show, here is Mike Biddle's car in Dubai, which Sean mentioned:

This is one of the two videos of the RST-V8 in the Caterham 21:

There are a couple more dated clips which can be dug out on youtube.

  10. Way cool.

I know of a RST V-8 in a S3 chassis Caterham in Dubai, which I saw in person on the 2005 USA tour. That car has seen an extreme variety of environments and a lot of miles over many years now, and I have not heard of any troubles or complaints from the owner. I also have seen build photos long ago of a Caterham 21 in Michigan with a RST V-8 fitted that was pretty far along, but don't know what the hell ever became of that effort. Here is a thread w/ a few photos/videos of it from a few years back.

edit -- Some more photos of the V-8 21 here.

edit 2 -- Found a photo I snapped at Infineon Sears Point from the Brit 7 invasion in 2005 showing the V-8 7 from Dubai (blue one, front row, lower right corner of photo). In the same photo is Rahul's WCM Ultralite, but back when Frank owned it (yellow, furthest left in the photo).

  11. Bruce - And just to clarify all the speculation here, the UK assembly will be by Caterham?

I can confirm that the assembly is done by Caterham in the UK. Randy and I were just at the factory two weeks ago. Stay tuned for a blog...

My opinion on the matter, consistent with what others have voiced, is that this paradigm shift towards rollers is largely a positive. Consistent quality and elimination of shortages is the right direction in terms of experience. For those who would like to build the car themselves, that will remain an option. So in essence, nothing has changed except for the location of the build.

  12. If you are saying it would equate to $39k today that really underlines BigDog's point. I looked at a new R300 last weekend - $67k. Clearly the prices have far outpaced inflation.

The R300 is $43,420 USD. Of course you need an engine and transmission, but most are just using an $800 used Duratec and the 5 or 6 speed Caterham gearbox. A CSR can be built for significantly less than the number you are referencing.

  13. Thanks! Anyone running supports of this variety?
