  1. When I get home, I can throw a match in and see... http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/wink5.gif I will take a sample and do hope that it was not all H20. WOuld it nake sense that it was gas since the car has been sitting for a month? Scott
  2. It's the end of the year of vintage racing and I've known that cylinder #2 did have a compression problem. I have a 1600 Crossflow with 711M block. So I started to do a leak test. I turned the crank to bring piston #2 to the top of the compression stroke. The easiest way for me is I have one of those small flexible lights on a "stick" that can fit into the spark plug opening and see it coming up to the top. As the piston was rising I saw the light getting wet! So, there is maybe a 1/16 inch of what I strongly believe is water on top of the piston. When I put about 40lbs of compressed air into the cylinder, I heard a "gurgling noise" coming out of the open weber carburetor when the piston was at the top of the compression stroke.. So, this can not be good, the question is..... how bad do you think?
  3. Away from home right now but can post one when I return
  4. I'm sure this is a straight forward question (if you have done this before). I have braided fuel lines connecting to my Weber carbs. Due to adding a new throttle linkage, I need to do some rerouting so that the line now connects to a "fuel union" (ex. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8050011809). Not being a braided hose and AN fittings expert, how is this done?
  5. I recently broke a throttle cable on my Lotus 7 S4. One of my over the winter projects is to change the linkage. I have twin DCOE40 and the cable runs from the LEFT (driver's) side, then under the carbs to the attach point in between. I've seen various linkages that mount on top and under (e.g. http://www.rdent.com/pages/carblink.html). I assume clearances over (and also under) the carbs is an issue. Is there any advise on how to proceed? I'm sure this more difficult with a left hand drive car. Thanks Scott
  6. I need to replace the ignition wires on my 1600 Xflow. The Ignition wires previously on the car were labled 8-R (NGK). I'm assuming this was for 8mm wires. I picked up a set at a local auto parts store and see that they are 7mm wires. I installed them but the car is not running correctly (backfiring through the Weber Carbs). Could this be because the wire size is different? I'm thinking the 7mm wires were for the original ignition setup and I have a Crane Electronic ingnition now, thus maybe the 8mm wires needed. If true, is there an alternate car to locate 8mm wires that fit? Some more modern 4 cylinder car that the parts store can actually locate in their computer. Comments? Scott
  7. I warmed the car up to change the oil but I plan on changing plugs this weekend for a race at Watkins Glen. So, I'll warm it up forst and do another check. I will invest in a leakage checker since I live about 10 miles from a Harbor Frieght store (a dangerous thing to have nearby). Thanks for the ideas.
  8. I have a 1600 X-Flow (711M) in my 1970 Lotus Seven S4. I race this at Vintage events. It's got some upgrades like a performance Cam from Dave Bean, Carillo rods and 13:1 compression (which I would like to verify sometime). I recently did a compression test, plugs out & Carbs wide open with the following results (PSI): Cyl 1 Cyl2 Cyl3 Cyl4 160 135 145 155 Cylinders 1 & 4 are certainly close enough. 3 is a little out (10% off of cyl1) and 2 is more (15% off of cyl1). I have heard that the likely culprits are: - valves (bent?) - rings I can attest to an overrev even with the rev limiter (bad downshift). Any advice on proceeding? The engine has about 20 race hours on it. Also, do the readings in general (say if it was 160 across all) indicate the "strength" of the engine? Thanks
  9. Other ideas.... Seven Inspired Cars of North America (SICNA) Seven Inspired Cars of America (SICA) Seven Inspired Cars of the States (SICOS-want a club pronounced sickos?) Four Wheel Flyers (Probably too close to the UK magazine) North American Seven Inspired Cars (NASIC) Sevens Car Club of America (maybe SCCA is already taken?)
  10. I would certainly contribute to the cause. I also live in NC if that makes for a better legal situation....
  11. I was think the "bloodline" idea is what can be good for a car show and also can provide a direct affiliation from a Seven USA club to any other Lotus related type of club (e.g. Lotus NA, GB Lotus 7 Club...). From a membership and activities level I view the "independants" as being equals and being there to show how the world has taken the original Lotus Seven through the last 50 years and beyond. Just thinking out loud. Scott
  12. Any chance you can have a Lotus Seven USA club that has two "classes" of Sevens? The Lotus/Caterham "bloodline" class and to quote a recent book on the topic the Seven "Independants"? Scott
  13. I'm getting really excited about the 7-7-7 "rally" next year. One thing I was thinking of is how much do we want this event to grow? Is the intent to have a LOG 27 East? If that's true then the humble beginnings from Al may need a bit more organization, and possibly financing. Personally, I like the lower key approach but if people want to volunteer their time and not add too much to the overall cost of the event, then so be it. Either way, we'll be there. Scott
