Boxologist
my speedometer failed on saturday. I checked out the unit, the wiring and it all seems intact. the odometer portion still shows digits, but is no longer being increased. for the next 10 miles after the speedometer failed, it would occasionaly jump to 25-30mph and fall to zero. another 2/10 of a mile were added to the odometer in such a fashion. can anyone whose speedometer also failed tell me what the symptoms, causes, and fixes were to their setups. soareyes
Is the sensor end dirty/loose/broken? On my Birkin, the sensor seems very vulnerable located at the end of the drive shaft tunnel, but so far I've never had a problem. It seems a hit from road debris or even a splash from a mud puddle could put it out of commission.
Boxologist
there was a loose, or rather wobbly brass fitting near the back of the tranny right before the prop shaft, and a female plug nearby that i had not notice previously. also a bunch sealed/tied wires that are probably responsible for some CEL codes for damn AT ECU:banghead: I haven't run an electrical tester on the wires from the ecu to the speedometer with the car in motion either. :nonod:
Kitcat
My speedometer/odometer failed last week too. Then to add insult to injury, the entire speedometer unit fell part way out of the dashboard. I have been too busy dealing with the fact that the car also has quit starting to spend any time yet on the speedometer, tho I did find the brackets and nuts that hold it place on the floor. So I was able to put back in place at least. All of this in the middle of a 900 mile trip. I discovered one of the benefits of always attracting a crowd at every gas stop:"Uh, any of you Caterham admirers care to volunter to push me so I can bump-start this little beauty?" Never failed. My hunch is I heave a dead ignition switch. I will get to it this weekend. At the Dragon a fellow Sevener said his son asked him how he too could learn about cars and he advised his son to buy a British sports car. Its working for me.
