MV8 Posted September 3, 2022 Posted September 3, 2022 There is plenty of good switch gear to be had here and fairly cheap but anything that works for a few decades is good enough to replace with the original bits.
truckin-on Posted September 8, 2022 Author Posted September 8, 2022 (edited) Progress - worked my way back to the original problem! Grounding was fine, but the ignition switch wasn't PO or somebody had hacked-in a screw-terminal off-on-start toggle switch, and attached the wires with some really dodgy connectors. One of the wires had fallen off. I knew the original starter switch was bad, and had sourced a replacement from a nice chap in the UK. I cleaned-up the wiring, put new ends on, and re-installed the replacement switch and all now works as it should - except the indicators and flashers still don't flash. I ordered a new hazard switch from Caterham as the tests on my old one show it has problems, but I'm now convinced that the flasher is actually bad. I took the cover off the flasher, and it picks-up the relay and closes the contacts when the indicator switch is turned-on, but the relay doesn't release to make them flash. I'm fairly convinced it is indeed a JIS flasher - so anyone have a link to where I can get one without going back to the UK again? Here's a pic of the previous switch wiring... MV8 Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Hooray! ISO is European; JSO is North American. Any early 90s Lexus, any vw, any volvo, etc should have the ISO pin config. If you are considering LED lights in the future, consider using an "electronic" flasher made for LEDs that is not dependent on the electrical load of filaments to control the flash rate.
truckin-on Posted September 8, 2022 Author Posted September 8, 2022 MV* - thanks! I meant to say ISO, as the ones I have tried (no luck) are JSO. I just ordered a CF14 flasher unit (ISO), as the CF13 (JSO) certainly doesn't work. We'll see if that finally resolves the issues. 1
truckin-on Posted September 11, 2022 Author Posted September 11, 2022 Problem solved. CF14 flasher unit (ISO) for $7.99 from Amazon works as intended - thanks to all who chimed-in with ideas! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B8L68NSK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 2
