southwind25
the one concern we do have,,is someone tagging us in the side of this car. your elbow is obviously right there, and anything comming torwards you on the side will end up kinda scary.. we saw a 7 here somewhere with a nice bolt on side nerf bar configuration, cant find it again. we dont want to go adding a bunch of weight, just give ourselves a fighting chance :boxing: when grandma runs the red light. any other thoughts or configurations for side protection without looking all obnoxious? :bigears:

jbanker
The guys from Sugar Grove Racing have come up with kind of a nerf bar set up. It is pretty slick but more of a cone kicker/number plate deal. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1897826318_SugarGrove1.jpg I have something similar that I take on and off for autocross. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1632108126_Lefthander.jpg
jbanker
Here is another view of the Sugar Grove Racing nerf bar arrangement. Ultimately, the guys from SGR thought this could be further modified to provide some additional storage space on the outside of the car. Sort of like saddle bags. By the way, thanks to Jerry Eddens for taking the photos of the red car. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1170753014_SGnerf2.jpghttp://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/879085046_SGnerfTop1.jpg

gjslutz
You should practice taking a deep breath as that black rod trys to find the otherside of the car if you get T boned. I have seen some photos of a WCM with a few bars running front to back for protection, that will work much better. I don't think any of these cars will make it to the top 10 of crash worthy cars though.
EburgE
One piece of advice given to me was to NOT put slicks on these cars. If the car sticks too well during a side impact, then the car tries to stand still while the driver takes the impact. On normal tires, the car should be propelled sideways leaving the driver with a chance to survive.
jbanker
I run slicks when doing autocross only and street tires for track days and generally driving. I don't use the nerf bars for track days. The nerf bar is for rear wing protection against the many cones I hit and a permanent location to put my car number and class. Jack
southwind25
good point Gary It was the front to back diagonal ones... o / 0.... i have seen i am considering. once again i dont want to take away from the classic looks to make it into a nascar..but we are thinking just something for piece of mind...we will work on it. We found a good looking Birkin and we want to do a bit of personalization and improvement without adding bunches of weight..we dont want to end up with a billy bob birkin.
