Well, it's been a long time. Finally, Arya and I were able to converge on the car. He did most of the work, and I did most of the nodding. We got alot done. We started working Friday night, and will put in a few more hours tomorrow.

Here are some pics:

Say hello to the new trunk

Many more things to do, but it's past 3AM and I'm beat...

Mazda and Arya,

Looks like Franklin7 is going to be a lot more structural and stronger when you are finished working on it.

Nice work and how are you bending all of your tubing, what type of bender do you or is Arya just muscling them.

Very nice.

Hi Martin, Arya's bender is from http://www.jd2.com/

As you can see, he does some really nice bends - with no redo's. Every bend came out perfectly.

Yes, In the past my focus was to add power and make the car fun. This year's mods focus purely on the chassis. We are making it significantly safer with a real roll bar with proper bracing, and although I can't prove it, I think our modifications will also add significant stiffness due to what we are doing to the center tunnel. Before, the tunnel did not tie to the rest of the car very well...

We have also lengthened the passenger compartment so taller people can ride/drive, and moved the engine / tranny back in the chassis for better weight distribution, and up into the chassis to get rid of the exposed oil pan to allow the car to be lowered alot more.

In the process we have destroyed half the chassis  . A running joke between Arya and I is "Wow, we got alot done today. The chassis is even less complete"

You're not kidding, we really need to stop cutting stuff off and start putting things back together. :ack:

This is how we left the car this weekend.

That was after Mazda went a little nuts with the sawzall

These are the tubes that we ended up reworking/replacing(in red)

And this pile of tube is the culmination of two days of work

All in all, it was a productive weekend, but I really wanna stop cutting more things off the car! :)

Arya,

Take the sawzall away from Mazda and hide it so you can finish putting Franklin 7 back together or due you have a chop shop going on the side that Mazda dose not know about......:D ......:jester: Keep up the building and I know everyone enjoys seeing what the two of you are doing. :yesnod:

Arya .. I would like to order a new "trunk" for my Rotus with a tow receiver ..

Rob

We have a plan for that :yesnod: the hitch "assembly" will be a bolt on to the two bottom tubes that form the floor of the trunk.

When finished, I will issue a challenge to Busa for a tractor pull :jester:

The problem is that Arya has a fine selection of cutting tools

His portable band saw is awesome.

[Dr Evil] That will be one MILLION dollars[/Dr Evil] :D

In all seriousness though, I could probably do another, but I'd need your car and I probably wouldn't have time until the end of this year/beginning of next. Dunno if you were serious or not, but figured I'd throw it out there.

Rob, shoot me a PM if you'd like to talk seriously, seriously :D

Only 1/4 serious right now ..

BTW: Save the "Custer Toyota" aluminum sticker .. that's a historical memento! (Chris Custer, the developer of the Rotus, was the great grand nephew of George Custer)
