SevenHeaven
Have a new to me (used Caterham) which I'm trying to register in NYS. The law here requires I go through the Custom car requirements for NY. (as in building a HotRod). So I need on the NY forms, the serial Number, of what appears to be a 1998 Zetec engine. Can anyone tell me WHERE I find this number on the engine? :7rain: thanks much -geoff
11Budlite
Geoff - First off, welcome! On my '96 Zetec ZX1, the s/n is located on the flat boss above the starter and behind the black engine mount cap screw in the following picture. Mine was barely visible because of rust when I first got it. I'm not sure if it's in the same place on your ZX2 motor. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/407288543_IMG_0035.JPG Hope this helps, Bruce :7drive:
SevenHeaven
Bruce thanks! My engine looks a lot different (starter not near there for example), but that BIG cast number is roughly the same place. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/2082836960_IMG_2515_EngineBlockNo.jpg but Above the manifold, there appears a more 'offical looking number' and even a date stamp. Could this be more informative, and perhaps what NYS wants? (I guess this is actually on the head not Block so who knows???) Also I noted (doesn't show well in this low res pict) at top left of head, just underlip, there is a more recent stamp, using a dotted stamp, (probably hammered in) That perhaps indicates a rebuild or something (I just guessing). Does anyone know what that is? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/66438508_IMG_2512_FullEngineNoWithdate.jpg thanks all thoughts welcome. -geoff
gjslutz
Once you have the number how do you find out what year it is? Gary
SevenHeaven
Gary, In my case the car had to go through NYS vice squad inspection, he looked it up and told me the year. But of course, he may be just looking at what appears to be the Date stamp (way right) a circle with a 98 inside. Who knows where/ how the real data is stored or what format. It would be interesting to know the complete details on how all this is known and stored... and where. anyone? thanks
gjslutz
Geoff, Yes it looks like the head was cast the 5th month of 98. It would be unclear when they used the head though. Gary
BirkinBernie
I think you will find that the serial number is indeed on the flat boss above the starter as in the picture of the yellow engine above. It is very, very hard to see. It appears to have been etched with a laser or something - it is not stamped like we used to see. When I registered my car they wanted a rubbing of the serial number, but try as I could I could not get it to show up. The lettering is just too faint. But it is there.... 11Budlite
I had the same experience as Bernie. I cleaned up the boss very carefully and still was unable to read the s/n with complete certainty. If you want to see how the s/n relates to the date of mfg, you can try this link and see if it matches up. Go to "Zetec Resources" then "Documents" then "Ford Engine Age Table": http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/ Not sure how accurate it is for US engines because it's from a UK site, but it's worth a shot. I looked for the date on the original Ford ECU and went with that one because I already knew the engine was a ZX1 that was used between '95-'97. SevenHeaven
Just to be sure of what you are all saying... The serial number I want is Position 1 (see labeled picture below) Not at Position 2? thanks all http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1731907301_IMG_0035_2.jpg
SevenHeaven
Also, what is the number stamped in, in dotted pattern? in top left (faint but perhaps readable) Is it perhaps a rebuilders stamp, or ??? Thanks see picture: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1393742954_dotpatternNumber.jpg
11Budlite
The s/n should be on the boss that I circled here: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/589627137_IMG_0035.JPG I'm not positive on the dotted numbers but I would think it's a factory marking and not a rebuilders. gjslutz
Bruce, I picked my serial # off the pad you have shown above. My problem is it isn't in tables listed. My number is (7) numbers not (5)after the alpha number. What I found was: 1L7007015. I will get another close up when I pull the engine this winter. Do I have 1/2 of an small LSI? I do like your yellow color. Gary
11Budlite
Another UK site, Burton Power, has a date code table that looks like the same info. http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/ford_date_chart.aspx Gary - You have a ZX3 in your car don't you? I would assume it's a 2001 model year but I don't know about the "L" in the second character. And maybe the US engines have (7) numbers instead of (5) because we're much bigger than that little island country across the pond! As far as the yellow engine paint, it was the typical hot rod yellow. If I could do it again I'd use silver, gray, or aluminum because that yellow doesn't cover worth a crap and took me way too many coats. :ack: Bruce :7drive:
gjslutz
I didn't do your work, but the yellow looks to be worth the pain. I'm not a detail person and it shows. I must be missing a gene from what I see in the rest of the well detailed 7's I have seen. Gary
