Beluga84
Hello, I live in California and I was wondering if the 2.3 cosworth engines would be street legal? I been searching the site and seems the caterham is a street legal car but california has so strict restrictions I just wanted to be sure. If the 2.3 cosoworth is not a street legal engine to have in California what are street legal options? I am not looking for a car right now but I was browsing through the internet and saw a caterham and immediately got interested. I just want to know some information about these beautiful cars and what I can have on them in the state of California. Hopefully, I can own one in the future. Al N.
Beluga- Welcome to the forum. IIRC, you have to get an SB100 exemption to run most modern Se7ens out in CA. I think getting a pre-smog titled car helps out a lot (it's covered by vintage standards so you can run whatever engine is period correct). Note that I am an East Coaster, so I could be VERY WRONG. I'm sure some of the California contingent will chime in. There is also a California Caterham Club forum that you should check out if you haven't already: http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com/ -Al
Mondo
If the Lotus 7 is registered in another state as a 1976 or earlier than your probably ok (DMV is on the lookout for cobra kits that try to register as a 60s car). But most likely you'll have to do as Al said. The problem is the 500 exemptions go very quickly; in a matter of hours on Jan 2nd and it's just luck of the draw if your local DMV gets thru to Sacramento before they're gone. It's best to find one already registered here but I'm not trying to scare you. My DMV was kind enough to keep giving me temps all year(didn't get thru to Sacramento last January but 4 out 5 of us on this site did so odds aren't too bad). Happy hunting, there's some great cars out there to be had
