MNlotus
so i just bought a 2003 caterham super 7 dedion. i already got insurance on it but have a few questions about registering and getting plates. i live in MN and i just got the title in the mail today. i went to the license bureau today to get the title in my name. after them calling the state, he said i needed to go to a police station to have them inspect it to make sure its road legal. once i bring it there and have them inspect it, he said then bring the title back to them. so will i get something from the police saying they inspected it? and once i do that will the registration be like normal, and i will get my plates? will i need any other info when i go back to the license bureau? thanks for the help, Dan
DB6
I think you wil find that the police are normally pretty easy to deal with (in this context at least)my experiences, and a couple of my friends have been that they are mainly concerned with seeing if anything is stolen on the car and doing a pretty rudimentary and basic check of the car being "street legal", partic if you get a cop that likes cars. MNlotus
yeah thats what i have heard from others, that they check the basic stuff like matching VIN's and stuff.
pi7ot
In Iowa, a DOT inspector comes and visits your new arrival. The chassis receipt and engine receipt are necessary. Then he checks for roadworthiness . He then assigns an Iowa DOT specific VIN for the car plus you get a couple of stickers. One has the DOT VIN and the other says that The car has an Iowa DOT VIN. He also assigns value for taxation purposes. m
MNlotus
yeah that sounds right. right now it has a title from new york so it has the VIN and the NY assigned VIN. since i bought it used i don't think i have a receipt for the engine or chassis. will i be ok without it? and since i don't have plates, will the inspector come out to my house? drew...
Checking the VIN and having the paperwork for the major components was to establish the information required for registration in Minnesota. It is also to insure that cars and motorcycles are not being rebuilt from stolen parts. If the car has been registered in another state you should be able transfer that registration with proof of sale and proof of insurance. Minnesota no longer has emission testing so that obstacle has also been removed.
MNlotus
yeah think i should be fine, the title is from NY. i'll see once i get the car if i have any more problems.
pi7ot
Call the DOT in your area and see if you can schedule an appointment. Find out if it is necessary as the car has previously been titled/registered. That is if the registration procedure is similar to Iowa. It may not be necessary as the car is a preowned specimen. m

Al N.
I'm sure there's a clubber in the area who might lend the use of his/her trailer...
bball7754
Here in MO you can purchase a 1 day permit for driving to and from an inspection. It was around $5. MN might have something similar. Steve

If you do need to trailer the car for inspection contact me directly and I can help you out with a trailer. drew...
MNlotus
i went there and did that and the guy had to call the state. he was confused because it doesn't say caterham on the title and doesn't have the VIN, only the NY state issued VIN. when he got off the phone he said i had to get it inspected by the police and then go back to the license center. do you think i should try going to the license center again and point those things out to them? I believe all you will need to do is take the title and proof of insurance to the county license center and they should be able to transfer title and give you plates on the spot.
