US Air 1549 - Hudson

As a Pilot and one that has experienced what it is like to lose an aircraft engine while in flight and have to make a forced landing off airport (see Photos I am the guy with theyellow hat) I can say that Captain Sullenberger is one very cool and confident Pilot and Person who saved a lot of lives that day with his actions and decision to land in the Hudson instead of trying to make it to either of the airports that the controller was talking about during the emergency.

Went to New York last month for my brothers wedding. In relation to that last clip showing the airplane landing in the river, his wedding was in the building/pier on the right. It has full length glass windows facing the river and we were told it was quite a show for those using the place at the time the plane came down.

Lots of power lines where you put your plane down! Nice work! Way to keep your cool!

My Son just solo'd. Hope he has as good training/instinct if he ever finds himself in that kind if situation. What caused the problem?

Well it was a bad tappet that caused the cam to come through the engine case while in cruse mode.

If you look at the lower right corner of the photo you can see where the cam burst through the case at the web which is the thickest part of the case (bottom of photo is the top of the case). Engine had 1497.8 hours of run time on it and had just been inspected at 1496 hrs so it was very unexpected when it happened. I actually rolled into the truck scales after I had touched down on the road on that stretch of the highway which has all the power lines running over it.

The scale operator was very surprised when I pulled in and came running out of his building like he was on fire.

The semi driver that I touched down in front off was even funnier when he finally pulled up and asked if I was OK and then said he had to leave as he had to go change his paints because the last thing he expected was to have an airplane land in front of him on the highway after coming out of the mountains. I told him thanks for stopping traffic so I could get into the scales and off the road. The FAA person kept looking at the road and the wires and trying to figure how I was able to get under all the wires until I explaned that I had actually landed before the wires and rolled into the scales area.
