slngsht Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Does anyone know what's used for floor on Caterhams? What about side skins?
slomove Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 For the skin I would consider 5052 alloy. Rather corrosion resistand and formable. For the floor it does not matter, you can use the cheaper 6061. I have not measured the thickness but estimate the skin of my Birkin to be maybe 30 or 40 mil?
slngsht Posted June 14, 2011 Author Posted June 14, 2011 I think I used .049" 5052 on the Rotus... might go a little thinner this time.
MHKflyer52 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 slngsht, I used 6061-T4 .032 for the side skin as it was what was available when I skinned my car. Just have to anneal it to help shape it so it dose not crack when making very sharp bends. Normal bend radius cold is 1/2-1-1/2T for Bare T4 that is .064 thk. I used the method of bumping it into submission as shown in the photo below the cardboard siding. The floor I used 28ga (.0149") so I could tack weld it into place for added strength see the photo that is attached although I do not think you want to go that route as your car is a real 7 an not a clone like mine. Cardboard also works and is cheaper but dos not hold up as well and sure is hard to polish.......as seen in the attached photo. It dose make good templates though.
