danowens
I now own the 3rd Rotus built ('84) and it has a 1600 CC twin cam engine. I'm having a very hard time figuring out what year and model car the 1600 twin cam engine came from. The engine number on the block is: 3T 5283017. The local Toyota Dealer wasn't able to help me. Also the car stumbles and backfires badly as soon as it warms up. I replaced the ground cables and there was a very slight improvement. I have a new coil and will install that asap. Anybody have any other ideas? What about putting on an MSD ignition or something similar? Dan Owens Durham NC
slngsht
Dan, when you say "stumbles and backfires badly", is that only when you rump on it, like it hesitates and then goes, or does it lose all power and just carries on?
stevet
Dan, if no joy here you could try the Australians - sounds odd, but many of the sevens running there (known as clubmans or 'clubbies) run with Toyota power. Site is at www.ozclubbies.com I could post a request for you if that helps. Steve.

You sure it didn't say 2T? 1600 cc seems too small for a 3T. If it is a 3T .. it is a _3TG_ which came from late '70s .. early '80s racing Corollas and Celicas .. mostly in Australia and Japan. Mine is a modified 2l twin cam 2TG. 2TC and 3TC single cams use the same block as the 2TG and 3TG DOHC engines. You can find alot of parts at the junkyard that will bolt onto the 3TG. danowens
It backfires out the exhaust w/ a very very knowledgeable race buddy says could mean very rich running. That might explain why it happens more when warm. Backfiring out the carbs would be more likely an ignition/electrical issue. The carbs did have some rust scale in the strainers from and I'll check the sparkler pluggies for color. The Summit Racing tech support guy said to go w/ the digital ignition module, and the requisite heavier plug wires and coil. I might to that anyway just to be modern.
