Happy Veterans Day

Thank you to all who have served their country in the armed forces. I was in the Navy during the Vietnam war but I was fortunate enough to never be sent there.

Today I drove the Caterham in a Local Veterans Day Parade. I was invited by the Geezers (mentioned in another thread) to drive with their Corvette group. About 40 Corvettes, with a Kirkham Cobra and my Caterham bringing up the rear. As I drove onto the parade route a woman handed me two small American flags. I wedged one between the windshield and wind wing and kept the other to wave.

There was a very enthusiastic crowd, sometimes four deep along the route. Every time I would wave my flag, dozens of people would wave theirs, give me the thumbs up or shout "Thank You" I was wearing my leather Snoopy hat and that got a lot of "I like your hat" comments. At one point there were hundreds of school kids lined up and as I came along side they started yelling and screaming and waving their flags. About 50 of them stepped out and we did high fives as I motored by.

It was a feel good time. When I got out of the Navy in '68 it was better to not mention you were in the armed forces or you risked rude comments and being spit upon. Certainly no one back then ever thanked me for putting in years of my life for my country.

The pictures were taken by John Brumder, owner of the Cobra who also owns a Caterham SV. The pictures are used with his permission.
