May 13-19 Haines, AK to Anchorage, Ak roadtrip

Recommended Posts

My uncle decided to pick up his car and to uhaul all his stuff in storage from Juneau to Anchorage so I decided to join the convoy.

May 13 arrived in Haines via ferry from Juneau to start the 750mi drive to Anchorage, Alaska. Didn't have much opportunity to take many pics since it was a straight A to B drive and forgot to charge my digital camera. I was able to take a few pics of a lotus elise from australia in Haines Junction. Here's a link to his blog.

A few pics of the elise off my blackberry

The drive ended up being 15hrs long w a 1hr stop in Tok, Alaska for dinner at Fast Eddies. Just love their Alaskan burger. Thoughts about the drive would be to check you tires. Mine went up to 25psi which is enough to shake my brains to mush over the frost heaves and road ripples. I ended up lowering them to 19psi w 150mi left to go. Also forgot to bring a glass cleaner so dim headlights and a dirty windshield made for rough night driving. Its mentally tiring to have a vehicle that can't keep pace, we had to keep slowing down to let the uhaul catch up. Convoy include my 7, my uncle's 2002 Honda RSX w/ a badly slipping clutch and a uhaul w/ 17ft box.

Memorable moments:

Chasing the RSX and hitting 95mph when the lower half of my passenger door blows out. Slowed to 65, reached over and re-secured it.

Seeing moose on the side of the road, 9 in total. Honked to let them know I was approaching and kept and eye on them til they were headed away from the road.

May 14th 130a entering Glen Highway mountain roads and praying for my cousin, leading in the uhaul, to pull over before we fall asleep at the wheel.

Uhaul suddenly brakes and a rabbit rolls out from underneath it. Quick evasive saves me from a new nosecone.

jlumba81,

Have you driven back to Juneau yet? When you were in Anchorage, you should have given me a call; I'm in the phone book.

I believe this is the second Juneau-Anchorage-Juneau trip that you have made in your Caterham, right?

I'm hoping that Giles Cooper, the Aussie with the long-distance Elise, will be calling me when he reaches Anchorage. I had made contact with him earlier, when he was in California and Colorado. He'll have more than a few miles under his belt by the time he rolls into town.

jlumba81,

We have family visiting from Virginia (just arrived last night), or I'd try to look you up before you depart back for Juneau today.

Br sure to let me know when you may be coming for the autox in September. Will that be the Sept. 9 or Sept 16 autox (or perhaps both?)?

Let's keep in touch.
