What year should it be?

When my CSR goes for it's first licensing inspection, I may have the option of a "Replica" designation. If I am lucky enough for that to happen, what year would be best? I'm thinking a 1966. That would be pre just about all regulations.

In my state the MSO designates what year your car will be title as. You did get an MSO with your car didn’t you?

Thanks, though since there's only about a one in fifity chance of me being in your state, I'll go with my local laws and see if this will qualify for a Replica designation. So, my question still stands: If this can be a Replica, what would be the best year?

I will be going through the same process in CA shortly and am planning to designate '66. I don't know the details but believe if it much later than this, there are some additional smog requirements. Any earlier doesn't matter in terms of smog, i.e. a PCV system is required even for late '50s / early '60s cars.

When I registered my Caterham in California recently the issue of "year" only came up when I met with the referee at the CARB. The magic number that he suggested was 1960 - which is a threshold pertaining to emissions issues - and my car is now forever exempt from ever having to go through a smog inspection.

Yeah, in California, the "year" is just an emissions thing. The reference year chosen for that purpose doesn't appear on the title or registration. The actual year of the car shows up on those documents.
