afs Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I currently have 195/55/15 (23.4" dia) on 15x7 rims. I have 3" clearance at the sump and have no issues with this setup. It is a '95 Classic (live axle) with Zetec (not sure of HP: Ford racing head, Kent cams, Jenvey throttle bodies, etc) and Quaife differential. I'd like to get R888s with 205/50/15 front (23.0" dia) and 225/45/15 rear (22.8" dia). This would drop road clearance at the front of the car 0.2" and the rear 0.3". This is mostly for street. Some questions: Do you think the clearance at the sump is adequate with the slight drop? I assume those sizes will be fine (I need more rubber in the rear). What kind of pressures are you running with R888s? Will I notice a dramatic increase in stone throwing with these tires versus high performance summer rubber? I also have a gorgeous set of 13x7 polished Minilites but I think the 205/60/13 (22.6" dia) would be getting it too low at the sump, although big advantages in weight. I only want one set of wheels/tires. Thanks for the help!
yellowss7 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I believe, 75mm is about the minium clearance at the sump that you should go on the street. Even then, you'll have to watch for squirrels as you may High Center on them if you hit them with the sump.:jester: The R888's are stickier, but stones get thrown up with any tire IMO. The clearance issue that I dreaded was a steep driveway entrance, either entrance or exit. I find you have to either plan your route or be very conscious of conditions. Tom
pi7ot Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Clearance will be adequate, until it is not. :hat: I'm on borrowed time as I have not installed a sump guard. I run 16-18 psi on 205 50 15 Kumho Victoracers. I run 20psi on soft sidewall 195 50 15 street rubber. In my experience the R comps will pick up and toss more stones due to the wider tread, the stickier compound. I added "mud flaps" to the front fenders but still get stones thrown up into the cockpit. I also have to clean out the lower frame rail/body joins of stones. m
ayseven Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 My lack of ride height cost me somewhere around $6000, and a year's driving. Not including the cost of angst.
afs Posted April 22, 2013 Author Posted April 22, 2013 Thanks for responses! Especially thanks for tire pressures for R-compound tires. I'm going to go with R888 205/50/15 and 225/45/15 (both on the 7" rims). What is the best source/type sump guard?
Donnie Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I'm probably a little late but, do you still have the Minilites? I can dispose of them for you. Thanks Don
BCBirk Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I currently run the R888 205/50/15 and 225/45/15 (18-20 psi) with a similar set-up. Overall, the balance is good but I would like a bit more progression when the rear starts to break loose. I'm wondering if a slightly more flexy 225/50/15 might work better with a live axle + LSD. Does anyone have experience with both ratios?
