twobone Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 After a long FAST road trip with the local Lotus club I noticed that at a stop the transmission is very hard to get into gear. Once rolling the transmission shifts fairly well. Is it most likely that my clutch is on the way out or perhaps my clutch cable has stretched or slipped a bit? Is that something that can be addressed in the interim with a clutch cable adjustment? If yes, is that a complex job? My thoughts are that once under way the synchros are making up for any poor clutch engagement. I have not noticed any unusual clunks or vibrations (no worse than usual) which might lead me to worry about gear box mounts or other out of alignment issues. Thanks for listening
MHKflyer52 Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I would have to agree that it is most likely your clutch needs adjustment as they do wear with use especially with a cable actuated system. If it where the trans mounts and engine mounts then the shift lever would be binding on the trans tunnel and you would have other issues if it was either of those things. Just my belief. Hope this helps.
bsimon Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Clutch is not fully disengaged. The input and layshaft are turning from clutch drag when the car is standing still and the 'box is in neutral. You need to adjust the linkage/cable/slave cylinder arrangement to stop the input shaft from turning. Till then, try pulling the 'box into direct to stall the layshaft then quickly switch to first gear. (an old trucker's bodge for a clapped out clutch/layshaft brake) The good news is your clutch is probably OK. It just needs linkage adjustment.
