Meyers Tow'd vs Lotus 7-1967??

Recommended Posts

The race (autocrosss and road course) is between a series 2 race prep 7, 145HP rwin cam and a Meyers Tow'd 120HP, Porsche .

Both tube framed cars-for Chapman the 6/7 his first real extension from modified austins and fords, for Bruce Meyers-his first extension from the VW pan.

About 850 Tow'd built, Sub 3000 7s.

Both "street legal"

I have owned a bunch of loti-several 7s-and I think the minimalistic-tow'd with an open wheeled configuration, might sing an interesting tune.

The trades of steering box for rack steering, the balance issue under acceleration=wheelies,I like the thought of engine heat behind me, and then swing axle rear with the tow'd-Mk6 lotus used a swing axle cut from a solid ford axle. Had a swing front and in an Allard, and a swing in the rear on a Karman Ghia-don't much care for the feel of swing-but never chased the issue with compensators and such.

So head to head in use --which is hotter?

Would really depend on the set-up. However anecdotal recounts from my father who was very active in auto-x back in the 60's with everything from a Datsun 2000 to a Covair turbo powered SuperV said that a Meyers Manx with good tires and a strong engine was a very hot ticket in his region.

Have always had a hankering for a tow'd for behind our motorhome. Not too common in the for sale lists, and those that have them know what they are worth, so haven't found one cheap enough to be in our garage....yet

He who has the most polar inertia loses. ave had several meyers with various engines from 40hp to Corvair 250hp turbo, all handle good but the tail weight loses with all else being the same. Now my old mid engine off road car with the 250 corvair would make short work of a seven when set down low. (a d-cambered swing axle will out perform any live axle.) But in the end set up and driver would make the most difference.
