620R whine - supercharger or straight-cut gear?

Hello All,

My name is Steve (SteveS). I am new to USA7s. I live in New York City. I don't currently have a Seven. My brother and built a Donkervoort Seven back in the mid-80's. I've recently been looking at the new Caterhams and watching the videos on Youtube. I hear a very high-pitched whine on the 620R videos. Could someone tell me if this is from the supercharger or the straight-cut gears?

I believe its from the Sadev sequential gearbox. If you watch vids of other 7s w a sadev they sound similar.

To be honest, I would not worry about it too much. You get very used to them quickly and sometimes learn to like the sound. Makes the car feel more raw.

Hi Steve - Welcome to another NYC resident. :seeya: There are a few of us around the area if you want to get to see a seven or just chat.

 

The whine you hear is definitely the gearbox and has a touch of the differential as well - Blubarisax's car makes the same sound and he has the same gearbox and no supercharger (but does have a distillery now!). The supercharger is a higher pitch sound.

As a young guy I couldn't afford 2 cars so my competition cars were also my daily drivers and most ended up with straight cut gearsets.

 

 

Yeah the noise is awesome the first 1000 times you hear it but it becomes not only a PIA after a while but you even start to cringe at the people noticing you as well. Attracting attention to cops doesn't help the wallet either.

 

 

Very tall first gears become very tiresome too, in fact my first CR gearbox for my Datsun B210 (geez I'm old ... ) was a straight swap for my road going 5 speed because the guy had had a gutful of the very tall first gear!
