James A
It looks like a much newer spec Caterham chassis and engine are being homologated for E Production in SCCA, see the spec below. Anyone know Aaron Hall who has requested the homologation? Wide chassis, 1" wider wheels, cycle wings, Sigma engine, this spec sounds like a real improvement over what SCCA allows in EP now! Kitcat
James: Isn't the proposed Sigma 1.6 liter engine less powerful than the currently approved 2.0 Zetec?
James A
In stock form the Sigma 1.6L has about the same hp as the Zetec 2L but less torque, I suspect it will have similar hp but less torque in its race form. I think the similar hp, lower allowable weight and what I have to think as better handling will make this the car to have. I really think the SCCA is going to have to allow owners of existing Caterhams to go to cycle wings and the wider tires, and the different ratio gearboxes. CarMan
Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery Innnnteresting! But Not Funny! I think the change is made because the ZETEC is getting a little hard to find. The origional ZETEC is getting long in the tooth. But I would like to see some bigger tires in this car. It looks a little goofy with the thirteen inch rubber
Kitcat
Guys: I am impressed. You appear very receptive to this possible change, even tho it would seem to make your carefully prepped Cats obsolete, or semi-competitive?
CarMan
To be truthful, I am a bit concerned about my car being "old school" but I realize that there are very few of us out there flying the flag. On the other hand, having raced against the "most legally modified" Cat in the East and seeing that his car has some durability issues and even though he has "Many many hours behind the wheel of Caterhams" I was still able to drive with him and, in the end, prevail. In the real scheme of things. The SCCA regional races now give out a $.10 cent checkered flag for the Sunday race only(you get nothing for winning the Saturday race) and we are there to have fun and swap the lead a few times during the race. My mission is to unload the car, race the whole weekend, Not have to fix things on the car till midnite, and pack it all up and do it again the next week. Sure I want to win..... I'll fight like a demon to do it. But I will do it clean and I'll do it without putting myself or anyone else in danger. I kinda like my competitors to get out of their 2nd place cars and smile that we "Had A BLAST!!!" And look forward to racing with me again. I know that this seems like a fools dream, but I have been doing this for three years like this and I am enjoying the ride.
CarMan
Oh I need to address the weight thing. The SCCA says that my car must weigh 1460 lbs after the race. I cant even get close. The officials now joke "YOU Weigh ENOUGH! Ha Ha" I usually weigh in at #1510 and it is ALL my fat ass that gives me the 'Movable" weight advantage. Enjoying flying the CAT flag. and until the purses get better...... meaning if they EVER give something worth hurting myself for (NOT) I just want to enjoy the thrill of driving this Go-Kart
James A
I welcome the update and the wider chassis, I just want to see that SCCA will allow the older chassis to remain competitive. It is not a perfect science but at least we need the cycle wings, wider tires, and maybe another point of compression to keep up.
Kitcat
Who is Caterham's SCCA lobbyist:)? I get the impression that Mazda has one.
James A
No is lobbying for Caterham except the people who race them and compared to Mazda we are round error!
ahall
Hey guys - I'm the one responsible for this update. I just joined usa7s today and started another thread about Caterham specs/setups for races. I imported my car from the UK and didn't come close to any of the regulations that were previously approved. I submitted the specs I had on my car, and the results are what you are seeing. I really hope I'm not upsetting anyone with those updates, but according to Caterham they haven't used the Zetec engine in a really long time (10+ years) so the Sigma engine I have is what I requested for. They informed me when I applied they would never allow the Duratec, because originally I was hoping to import an R500. Also, when I applied the person I spoke to mentioned almost nobody had a Caterham...I really hope these changes haven't messed anyone up! I'm based in Houston and will try to race with the SW region. My first one will hopefully be the Cinco de Mayo race - will I see any of you out there? I'm very new to this, so still need to learn the processes, but I'm looking forward to it. James A
I sent you a PM, but Welcome to the SW Region of SCCA, there are 5 Caterhams that race around here between Houston and Dallas. I for one am thrilled that you got the new spec homologated as hopefully we can move SCCA forward somewhat to a more competitive spec. We will be racing at Hallett on April 11 and 12 and at Texas World Speedway on May 23 and 24. In the meantime if you are new to SCCA please feel free to reach out. MichaelD
It's been a while since the last post. How is it going? Race results? etc.
James A
It's been a good year of racing, as I mentioned before we are unfortunate to be in the division with Matt Reynolds who is the National Champion in EP. At the NOLA Majors we were 2nd and 2nd to Matt but on the early laps on cold tires Andrew passed him only to get passed on the straights by a car with far higher HP. At Hallett a track we thought we could win at as the straights are short, we were again 2nd and 2nd, but did pass Matt both days in the early laps and on Sunday Matt spun and we thought we could stay ahead but he is just far too fast given all the SCCA allows on Mazdas and disallows on Caterhams. Our last Majors race at TWS everyone went to grid in the dry and on slicks and it started raining on the formation lap, what great luck, we were able to get ahead of Matt and stay there for the race! Sunday we had some issues and were 4th. With a break during the summer we are going to do an engine and gearbox refresh. We have petitioned the SCCA once again to ask for some hp so we can compete, but given the money Mazda puts in to the SCCA they are likely to protect their sugar daddy and tell us to pound sand. As you know the biggest issue we have are Mazdas that can do 150-160 on the straights and the Caterhams that can do 120...
Kitcat
You are going to need a V8 to get a Caterham up to 160 on the straight:)! Congratulations, tho, on a great year so far!
CarMan
Yes! congratulations! It sounds like you are having a good time, and even though you have a "FrankinMazda" out there, you are competing well. Please keep us in the loop, as we like to hear racing stories. We are on the road at 5am to race at Lime Rock this weekend. Hoping for a fun time. CarMan
I thought you needed to know what the impound area of Lime Rock looks like on the sunny day. Saturday was a perfect day until "JUST" before our group ran. We hustled to put on rain tires and went out in a Deluge. Poured the entire time and quit two minutes after the checkered flag fell. Even though we had rain tires.... Lime Rock is a slippery place. Finished first in class an second in group to a Pro-rainmeister. But it took him 12 laps to finally get by. After I finished, a sage offered his advice...."Those Lotus 7s are awful in the rain. How did you keep it on track and how were you so fast?" I was quite pleased to tell him.. "Practice" When it was Sunny on Friday. I was able to put down a 1.00 sec lap and take the class win and the fastest lap. But I am going to take July off, because of other commitments and I will return to racing in August and Sept. This is my first time uploading a photo here so I hope it comes out OK
