I did get a break in the weather today and I was able to take a short drive at lunch... I loved every minute of it, its exactly what I wanted. Pic: http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/432364_10150657250092699_770717698_9114568_1672296030_n.jpg

So I bought the black car off Loren and it is set to arrive in about an hour. I really can't wait to take my first drive and report back. Just wanted to officially say hi and I hope to add as much as I can to these seven boards!

New member, want to build a Birkin - any advise?
joshesh replied to joshesh's topic in General Sevens Discussion
So how did the track day go at LS today? Pass sound or meatballed? I have sold my Evo and I'm in the process of buying the black ultralite from Loren... Can't wait to join you guys at the track later this year! -
How about this picture: http://www.seriouswheels.com/2007/2007-Caterham-CSR260-Superlight-FA-Shop-1600x1200.htm It shows up close the hole in the hood and wiskers (come stock on this model) - so by updated backdate rule ALL DM/EM super 7 clones should be able to make these modifications. Unless the update/backdate rule isn't the same as it is in SP rules.
-
What about the wiskers and CSR hood vent, are they illegal somehow?
-
How are the whiskers protestable? If the csr had them along with the hood vent can't you work under the update/backdate rule and use anything another trim of your car has.
-
Is that legal in EM/DM for scca autox? I thought you can only have air going over one side of the wing (not both like a regular wing)? Please inform me if I am wrong.

So big thanks to Jim for letting me come over and waste 3+ hours of his time asking questions and talking cars/racing... I am 100% sold and totally committed to buying a ultralite... Hopefully I will be the new owner of the black car Loren has. Thanks for all the advise and help/comments. As soon as I have the car you will be hearing lots from me on his board! -
It is good they took out MTBE, but you are able to remove it. Check this link out: http://www.ozonesolutions.com/journal/2009/ozone-lab-testing-mtbe-vs-ozone/ I currently work in the ozone industry, and cleaning up contaminated groundwater around the U.S. with the use of ozone to clean up things like: MTBE, TBA, TPH and many other VOC's.

I'm surprised that you went so far out of your way to coat all of your aluminum just because you wanted to run e85. I along with hundreds of other evo's and sti's around the country have been using e85 in non-flexfuel vehicles for years now and not one of us has had any of the major corrosion issues you speak of. To back that up I have this link: http://evoempire.org/community/index.php?/topic/11571-fuel-system-after-3-years-on-e85/ ^ Showing clearly that after 3 years and 50k miles of e85 no corrosion or additional issues. I have now been driving on e85 longer than I have been on 91 oct, the car loves and has not had any of the failures you speak of or are worried about. Just sharing info, but there is lots of myths surrounding ethanol and motors - and I can vouch first hand that it has made no harm and nothing but a bigger grin on my face when I got WOT :hurray:

So little update: Going thi Saturday to meet up with rnr and Jim rankin (two ultralite owners) so I can sit inside and take a look first hand. Also, getting closer to selling my current racecar... Can't wait to join in on all the fun! -

I am very much a DIY'er, and I would only buy an assembled car to save money in the long run... i am actually looking forward to doing work on the car and making it my own so I enjoy the idea of a full build from a kit. -

I appreciate all of the comments. I know that cars are going to depreciate, and I can tell after looking at prices of used specimens I can see what you guys are talking about. I really just want something that will keep me happy, enjoying driving on the roads again and enough fun at autox/track days to satisfy the craving for pushing the limits. I need to sit in a few, but from a purely dimensional standpoint the Ultralite seems like it would fit me the best. I know I could fit in the caterham non-SV (cause I did) but it was tight and I don't think I would drive it much if I didn't fit comfortably. I want it to be reliable, fast and unique... an ongoing project with always something else to customize and make better. Again, thanks everyone for the responses - I am gearing up to sell my 370 awhp evo9... I'll be joining the club officially very soon I hope. -

I'm definitely interested, did you build it and how many miles are on this one? PM me more details, and if nothing else I really like the kits you sell and I would like some more info. I need to sell my current car, but already found a close friend who is interested so I'm not too worried about that part. -

I'm very interested in the kit, but I'd also like to see what the pics look like on the finished one for sale. Post them when you get a chance, thank you. -

I will definitely search out a few more birkins and sit in each to make sure I fit. I am 5'11" and 225 so i should fit, there is a guys who autox's his superlight caterham and he is 6'2" 300+ lbs and he had to do some modification to lower the seat and expand the foot well. So if he can fit Im sure I will figure out a way to get comfortable in one. -

I fit snugly into the caterham superlight 500 chassis, it was not the wider body one. How much different are interior dimensions between caterham and birkin? And where can you get a kit for building a ultralight, I only see fully built cars available? -

Believe me, I will be reading and reading more. I have been through a few build journals for other Birkin's. I am also interested in the wide kit. And I drove a Caterham for the first time last week, has to be the top on my list of cool cars I have driven. I live in California so registration isn't super easy and that isn't really my goal. I want to autox and track car that I can customize and make myself for my tastes. I will PM you for more details, thanks for the info. -

Like the title says, I am new here. Little background: I am a mechanical engineer, do a lot of hands on compressed gas systems integration and troubleshooting. In my spare time I'm an avid autox'er and currently run a 2006 mitsubish evo... but I am really debating selling it and buying a kit from the dealer in texas to start my Se7en build. So, if you have any comments please share - even if you think I'm crazy or dont think I can do it (cause I love when people tell me that -
I'm new here, no se7en yet but seriously thinking of selling my evo 9 and building a Birkin. I recently bought this microphone from sony, its $60 but it takes great sound in full wind situations as long as you mount it at a low wind area like under the seat. It requires a small watch battery, I tested it out on my dad playing acoustic guitar and playback was very realistic. Very nice setup, much better than the GoPro HD1 that had the worst wind noise problems.
