NVP66S
I wanted one of these in the worst way when I was in college in 1971. I missed by 2 weeks one that sold for $3500. The seller told me: "Oh, you don't want that car because it needs a new fuel pump and the frame is rusty" Didn't matter, as I couldn't raise the $3500. So I traded my 4 year old VW squareback and $200 for a 190SL. Sad, tired car. I learned a lot about working on cars. Sold it in ~1977. added $500 and bought a 1964 230SL. Shoulda kept them both..... scannon
In about '68 I was driving down the street in Seattle in my '63 Corvette split window. A 300SL Gullwing pulls up next to me at a stop light, opens the little window and the driver yells at me "want to go for top end for $1,000?", I yelled back "sure, right after we do the quarter mile for $2,000". He closed his window and made a right turn. On a cold, snowy winter day in Colorado about 10 years ago I was on the way to work and was stopped at a red light with a fairly steep uphill slope. I looked to my right and up comes a silver Gullwing with two people in it and makes a right turn without a complete stop. The car looked flawless from where I sat and I was so dumbfounded at the sight of a Gullwing on the road in a snow storm I didn't notice the light had changed until the cars behind me started honking. jimrankin
In the early 1980's a fellow sub contractor got stuck unpaid by a fly by night home builder. When he was contacted by the guys wife about signing off on his mechanics lien on the houses she offered him a gullwing as payment so she could sell the houses as they were. He looked at it and it was in good shape but he didn't go for it because she didn't know "if it ran or not" and the battery was dead. He ended up with zero dollars out of the bankruptcy and is still kicking himself in the butt every time someone mentions one.
Jesse D
When I was growing up in the later 50's in Cincinnati there was a divorced woman in my parent's circle of friends who drove a Gullwing. She would let me go out and sit in the parked car, which I could do for hours. I often wonder back on who she was and how she was a part of this circle of friends, all of who were classic 50's husband and wife combos in the conservative midwest. I don't remember the wives being particularly afraid of her so she wasn't husband hunting in that set, but I often wonder about the things a seven year old wouldn't have picked up on.
