Duratec question

I understand that the Duratec has a balance shaft. Is this removed in the course of a rebuild for our purposes? Ramifications? Sorry but the search function isn't working.

Some Duratecs have a balance shaft; others do not. It depends on the application. As I understand it, the 2.3 Ranger blocks do not have one, but the 2.3 Focus ones do. Not sure about the 2.0, but I believe they all have one. The Focus modders have BS delete kits for removing it, as it is heavy. I don't know a lot about it first-hand, but I recall seeing discussions about this on Focus forums in the past. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

All of the necessary info was on the focus fanatics site. Not a big deal. The Cosworth BS delete kit is about $40 and simply seals the oil supply port once the BS are removed.

In order to remove the bolt holding the pulley and timing ring to the crankshaft, is it sufficient to just install a long enough 10x1.5 bolt in the alignment pin hole on the side of the block to hold the crank or is it still necessary to use the bar across the pulley as well?

@Papak - I just dealt with this over the weekend when replacing my head gasket. The bolt that locks the crank should be sufficient. Note that you may want to replace the diamond washers that lock the valve timing gear to the crank and the pulley to the crank. There is no keyway on either of those, so if the diamond washers are worn they may not lock things down properly, leading to BOOM.

Another thing, the locking bolt only prevents the crank from turning clockwise, not counter. You can actually see it hit the flat part of the crank counterbalance with the timing cover off to make sure you have everything happily at TDC.

Reading this, now I wish I checked whether I still have balance shafts when I had the motor apart! I didn't even think to look...

Correct only the Focus 2.3L, Fusion 2.3L, Mazda 3 -5 -6 2.3L have the Balance Shafts on them... The ranger trucks do not have them...

The 2.0L Duratec do not have them either...

If you need help with any questions we can help you as we build these all the time...

Thanks

Tony
