Kitcat Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Is there a measurable performance advantage at the track with a Brooklands screen? I assume if there is, it's with top speed. My 1700cc Crossflow SuperSprint is good for about 110 mph indicated, probably more like 103 mph, corrected, and it's pretty slow getting there after about 85mph. Since one of my main focuses with my car is doing track days, is this worthwhile? Is it that hard to swap out for the windshield (I don't trailer, I drive everywhere, and would want the full windshield for the road). Mike
Al N. Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Mike- Not the retro look, but the aeroscreen I have for sale in the parts is probably a lot easier to swap in and out than the brooklands. It was designed ot be interchangeable: Two snaps and two screws (although you still have the hassle of taking off the regular windshield). Note that it is different than the original JPE screeen..the sides go down the scuttle more. FWIW, when I drive longer distances in the car, I've worn a full face helmet...to protect from stones and minimize fatiguing effect of wind buffeting. -Al Some pix: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/420865287_AeroThreeQuarter.jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/246984409_aeroside.jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/489401647_AeroRear.jpg
Kitcat Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 I typically wear a helmet for anything more than around the town, even with the windshield up & top in place. And, I may start doing it around town too. It makes it quieter and I like doing something to try to offset the car's inherent lack of driver protection. With the screen you are selling, where does the wind hit your helmet?
Al N. Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 I don't actually know...had to put in the full windscreen to pass NJ registration.
BusaLoco Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 In (very) British Columbia (that's Canada eh) Brooklands Aero Screens "don't fly" for licensing. All windshields have to be one piece (bridging both sides of the scuttle, they have to be made of safety glass and you must have windshield wipers (2 speeds) with squirters). Nonetheless I love mine (if only for dramatic effect)! If you are planning to mount Brooklands you will have to modify one of the mounting brackets (or build a mounting platform , like I did) that conforms to the curvature of the scuttle. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/2101372055_Sept 2006 pics 005.jpg
pierats Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I would expect the top end speed to be higher with brooklands or an aeroscreen than with a full windscreen. However, I've not had a chance to test this theory. I would guess a couple of MPH at the very least. For Autocross, I don't expect it would make a difference, as the drag from the airflow really only becomes an issue at high speed. It is *much* easier to see where your wheels are without the full screen.
