jimmylukeii
I just registered in NC a few weeks ago. Caterham kit build. It was super easy. I called the Hayesville tag office and told them I needed an inspection. They gave me the cell number of an inspector/cop. He travelled between the various Western North Carolina tag offices, so I confirmed when he would be nearby. That was the Franklin tag office 2 or 3 days later. He ran the VIN / chassis number to confirm nothing was stolen. He also matched it to the manufacturer's statement / certificate of origin. He asked me what it was, and I told him it was a 1962 Lotus Seven replica. He googled it and confirmed they looked similar. I then walked into the tag office with his "not stolen" report, proof of insurance, the MV5 form (2 sentences explaining that I built the car from a kit with all brand new parts), and all build invoices from my importer. Paid the tax ($1,800 or so if memory serves). 10 minutes later, I walked out of the Franklin tag office with a real / metal tag. Official registration paperwork and vanity plate will arrive in 4 weeks. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
UglyFast
Good for you. That sounds positively delightful compared to some state processes. Here's hoping SC is this easy breezy soon.
