Sad news from the rally world

I grew up in Chester ,England which was the start, finish and H.Q for the British Rally championship for many years. I was lucky enough to see Colin progress from driving a little front drive G.M rally car to becoming World Champion and putting Subaru on the map forever. The rally used to last for several days and we have spent many nights sleeping in cars,in winter,in a damp cold forest just to watch this guy come through the rally stage with 100% "balls out" (on the limit) car control. He was known for being able outdrive just about any car and also getting a car to cross the finish line no matter what "inconveniences" had occured during the event. Colin was and still is a hero to every car nut that grew up in my generation.

His family are all equally talented yet still remained very down to earth and would always spend time to talk with the fans as I experienced at 11:00 pm in a Burger king one night whilst following the 95 rally. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Truly missed by all !

This is the sort of flat out driving that all fans and his family will want him remembered for.

Great clips.

It's now been officially confirmed. McRae, his 5-year old son, as well as a friend of his son's and an adult friend of the family.

Very, very sad.

Very sad indeed. A good friend of mine knew the McRea's well, and I met him a couple of times through my work with Ford motorsports. He'll be sadly missed, as will the others involved in this tragic event I'm sure.

Like many, he was my favourite ralley hero's. I thought Rossi was pretty cool in dedicating his MotoGP win yesterday in a tribute to Colin.

Never the easiest on cars but always spectactual.

He will saddly be missed.

The saddest part is that his 5 year old son was with him, atleast when Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman died it was doing what they loved (rallying) Its a crazy crazy world and as Smokey used to say "Live life like today is your last."

What's since come to light and is just plain creepy is that David Richards and his wife were on their way home from the Belgian GP yesterday in his helicopter when it experienced transmission problems shortly before their destination and crashed!! Happily, they walked away, but it's the strangest coincidence and gives pause to reflect on how random such events are.

I've always loved rallying, and have felt it is the hardest form of motorsports to drive for. It sucks that this happened, and especially that his son was involved.
